There is a growing sentiment over
the state for calling a primary to set-
■ tie the iseue of the United States
senatorshlp.
tVhatever the feeling of politicians
I regarding the matter, there is hardly
any doulbt that the people want the
matter referred back to them. Cit
izens from all sections of the state
coming to Atlanta now are unanimous
in so expressing themselves.
“Personally I do not know the mind
or intention of the state executive
committee or others Interested In the
Issue." said one prominent visitor,
“but I do know that the rank and ,
file of the people want a primary. They
feel that all manipulation and schem- (
ing will Ibe obviated by taking the
matter back to the voter.
“It Is also probably true that the
legislature would favor throwing the (
election Into the general assembly, be- t
cause that body like the excitement of (
changes, and It would bring on some
thing new. If it goes to the legislature, j
and that body should name Hoke
Smith, he would stfrve only until De-
cember as governor. Then, however,
If Slaton waa elected president of sen- ^
ate he would serve as governor until
an election was called to elect a gov- ( 3
ernor.

ticular tiger is whom, it Is said, soma
time ago made claims upon the ex
press company for whiskey that was
lost in transit.
He wanted $1.50 a quart. The ex
press agent is said to have told him
that it was not worth that much', and
he remarked that it was worth that
much* to him ‘"because he got that
much? for it.”
Today this tiger confessed his sins
before the grand jury and went as far
as to read them a chapter from the
Bible where Chlrist was confronted
dismissed with the injunction to “go
and sin no more.” Tr|is Valdosta
tiger applied these things to himself, j
He told how he had worked to make
an honest living to support hia fam
ily, and that what whiskey h« had sold
was purely to raise money for an
honest purpose and in order to avoid
bogging for a living.
The man's physical condition, as i
well ns his sincerity evidently appeal
ed to the members of the grand jurv,
for they refused to find a true blT!
against him and instead of that they
took up a collection and gave him
about $15 in money.
It wsa the most complete triumph
that has yet been registered by a ti
ger of the blind variety.

It is this shifting of scepes that
tbe politicians likes, and the one he
will «work for. But the people do not
see all the plot and counter-plot
through this method, and they there
fore, want to settle the question them
selves at the polls.,
‘‘Of course, there Is a way the peo
ple can force the issue of a primary if
they desire and the state executive
committee declined to call one. And
that is through conty action. There
is nothing to prevent the county ex
ecutive committees from acting* and
enough could so act as to force the
state primary whether or' not the state j
committee wanted it.” -
