This is the story of Alexander McDonald, one of the best-known cliaiacter* in the Yukon valley. lie is a great lumbering Scotchman — -born in Nova Scotia—who up to the time of the Klondike discov eries never had an idea of winning a greater fortune than that of a day laborer, lie worked f rom mining camp to mining camp all along the Northwest. Sc slow was he and so awkward in his work—his feet en tirely in his; way and his size a misfit for .the size of prospect noles—-that he was reputed never to be able to hold a job for longer than three weeks. He was at Dawson shortly after the lirst locations were made on the Klondike, lie went, out with numerous stampedes, but never arrived in time to .locate a paying ciaitn. Finally bv stumbled across a newspaper man named Hunt, wtio bad a claim on Bonanza creek Hunt nad become discouraged because he had not the funds necessary to devel op it. This claim McDonald purch ased for $300 and set about develop ing it in bis usual slow and aimless fashion. Finding the claim fairly rich, be put on u force of laborers and in a few weeks had taken out $80,000. This sum he 11 ed imme diately to purchase other claims. Ail the year h; bought right and, left everything of anv promise that was offered to him, often mortagaging the claims thus bought to buy still other ground. Many of the ventures came to naught, but a few gave such phenomenal returns that he speedily took the rating of a millionaire. Out of one claim 011 El Dorado creek be shoveled $20,000 in twelve hours. Today he is probably worth between two and three million dollars. Many others came to soccers even more suddenly than McDonald. One man on Bonanzo creek took < ut ninety pounds of gold—about $25* 000—in a single day. A pan Of gravel <>n E! Doratn creek yielded its lucky owner $2,10U. This same man cleaned up three thousand ounces of dust arid nuggets from his week’s work.—Ainslee’s Magizine. Ono interesting fact ab *ut the cap ture of this sword has not before been published. Several weeks afte'r Cadet W nor lost his life, a land battle was fought near the scene, in which Major Spence, of Georgia, took an active part. Major Spence killed an oflieer of the native forces, and the sword carried by the Filipino was found to be the one taken from the body of young W ood. It was by Major Spence sent to the navy department with a suggestion that it. be conveyed to the father of the cadet. The body of young Wood has never been found.— ; Atlanta Journal. It is impossible, also, that any attempt to change tho law now that it is once passed, should meet with success. The shameful robbery has begun and will go on. The chance for fat picking has brought a horde of adventurers and place hunters of high and low degree to Washington, and the White House has been thronged with them. Senators arid Representatives who did the President’s bidding in voting for Porto Rican bill have called in droves asking for their reward in the shape of franchises, concessions or offices for their hungry constituents and nothing is more certain than that they will get it. Another bluff that the Republicans are trying to wrrk on tlie country is in connection with the repeal of a portion of the wai revenue act, and a consequent reduction of the surplus of $150,000,000 which will be piled up in the Treasuty by June of year. As a matter of fact, neither the President nor the party wishes to rduoe taxation. The Treasury now has some $125,000,000 loaned out to favored banks through. O out tile country. By next fall there will be $75,000,000 more to loan. No interest is asked on ibis, and the banks will be told that if the Repub lican furty rein, nns in power, the money will lie continued to thorn imudinitelv. What is more probable than that the grateful banks will insist on contributing to the Repub lican campaign fund a small portion of the amount they would have to pay in interest if they should borrow the same amount of money elsewhere Oh no, to repeal the war ta\, would cut off at least $2,000,000 of ca rn paign funds to be derived from the banks and the Republicans are not anxious for anything p! that sort. Representative Dc Artnond, of Mis souri, has introduced a bill to require the banks t" pay interest to the government on these deposits, but nothing is more certain than that it will be smothered in committee. ft now seems that, the House wilt pass tbo Nicaraguan canal bill early m .May, after having emasculated it So alt l o' satisfy iiie scruples ol President McKinley and Secretary_ I lav.
