This is the story of Alexander
McDonald, one of the best-known

— -born in Nova Scotia—who up
to the time of the Klondike discov
eries never had an idea of winning
a greater fortune than that of a day
laborer, lie worked f rom mining

Northwest. Sc slow was he and so
awkward in his work—his feet en
tirely in his; way and his size a misfit
for .the size of prospect noles—-that
he was reputed never to be able to
hold a job for longer than three
weeks. He was at Dawson shortly
after the lirst locations were made
on the Klondike, lie went, out
with numerous stampedes, but never
arrived in time to .locate a paying
ciaitn. Finally bv stumbled across
a newspaper man named Hunt, wtio
bad a claim on Bonanza creek Hunt
nad become discouraged because he
had not the funds necessary to devel
op it. This claim McDonald purch
ased for $300 and set about develop
ing it in bis usual slow and aimless
fashion. Finding the claim fairly
rich, be put on u force of laborers
and in a few weeks had taken out
$80,000. This sum he 11 ed imme

the year h; bought right and, left
everything of anv promise that was
offered to him, often mortagaging
the claims thus bought to buy still

came to naught, but a few gave such
phenomenal returns that he speedily
took the rating of a millionaire. Out
of one claim 011 El Dorado creek be
shoveled $20,000 in twelve hours.
Today he is probably worth between
two and three million dollars.
Many others came to soccers even
more suddenly than McDonald. One
man on Bonanzo creek took < ut

The sword of Cadet W. C. Wood, of
Ge rgia, who was killed in Cun boat
Urdiniada, in Phillippine waters dur

was to day formally delivered by the

The sword lias the name of the
young lieio tnj.wived on the blade.
Mr. Tate will [.restut the sword in
person to,the fuller < i Ca-Lt Wood,
who is u resident of Pickens county.
Ono interesting fact ab *ut the cap
ture of this sword has not before
been published.
Several weeks afte'r Cadet W nor
lost his life, a land battle was fought
near the scene, in which Major
Spence, of Georgia, took an active
part. Major Spence killed an oflieer
of the native forces, and the sword
carried by the Filipino was found to
be the one taken from the body of
young W ood. It was by Major Spence
sent to the navy department with a
suggestion that it. be conveyed to the
father of the cadet.
The body of young Wood has
never been found.— ; Atlanta Journal.
