Roberts’ era ’’officially” begins
at Reinhardt University
"It's the salt of the earth and a light on a hill," was the
way Dr. Mark A. Roberts described Reinhardt University in
his presidential inaugural address last Friday. Roberts, a
native of Maryville, Tenn., is Reinhardt’s 21st president.

"We are here today to take
up the mantle of those who
came before us," is how Dr.
Mark A. Roberts summed up
the purpose of his inaugura
tion as the 21st president of
Reinhardt University.
Last Friday, Feb. 25th, the
Falany Performing Arts Cen
ter on the university's campus
in Waleska was the site of the
inauguration ceremonies,
which were mostly ceremo
nial as Roberts has already
been serving as president for
the past 20 months.
After the resignation of
Dr. Kina Mallard on June
30th, 2020, Roberts was
named interim president

tution's phenomenal growth
over the past several decades,
the new president added,
"Reinhardt's direction is up
ward and outward."
Originally a school for all
ages and grade levels, Rein
hardt Academy was accred
ited as a two-year junior
college in 1953 and began
awarding Associate Degrees.
In 1994, Reinhardt College
became a four-year institu
tion offering Bachelors De
grees, and 14 years later, in
2008, gained additional ac
creditation as a graduate in
stitution. In 2010, Reinhardt
College became Reinhardt
University.
The theme of his inaugu
ral address was "Salt and
Light," and Roberts said that
the university represented
"the salt of the earth and a
light on the hill." He added,
"The university is something
outside of us, yet it is us."
Again, he alluded to the
school's humble beginnings
and encouraged everyone in
attendance to continue their
contributions to the school by
quoting from one of Geor
gia's most famous and
beloved authors, Joel Chan
dler Harris. Over a century
ago, Harris wrote an essay
exclusively about Reinhardt
and said, "From the first, the
college has been carried on in
the spirit of broadest benevo
lence."
When Roberts began his
speech, he drew laughter
from those in attendance
when he said, in trying to ex
plain to his sister exactly
what an inauguration was, he
told her, "It's sort of like a fu-

Roberts is not new to
Reinhardt. He has served in
the institution's administra
tion for nearly a decade, hav
ing been hired in 2013 as
Vice President for Academic
Affairs and Faculty Dean. In
2017, he was named First
Provost and two years later
became Executive Vice Pres
ident before being appointed
as interim president the fol
lowing year.
When Roberts was offi
cially named president last
April, the Board of Trustees,
in making the announcement,
said Dr. Roberts was "highly
respected and a proven
leader." The new president is
said to be not only respected,
but well-liked by the admin-
stration, faculty, community,
as well as the students.
A native of Maryville,
Tenn., Roberts grew up on
his family's 50-acre farm in
the foothills of the Great
Smoky Mountains. He
earned both Bachelors and
Masters degrees in English
Literature and Language
from Middle Tennessee State
University before receiving
his Doctorate from the Union
Institute and University.
Roberts is well-known for
writing poetry about Ap
palachia and has had many of
his poems published in sev
eral literary journals and po
etry anthologies.
Reinhardt University, a
private institution affiliated
with the United Methodist
Church, has well over 1,700
students studying in 40 dif
ferent areas of instruction.
Alumni hope Roberts will
continue in the tradition of
leadership of previous long
term presidents, such as Dr. J.
R. Burgess and Dr. Floyd
Falany. (The administration
building is named for
Burgess and the performing
arts center, which hosted the
inauguaration, is named for
Falany.) Since its founding
over 140 years ago, Rein
hardt has been the secondary
education choice of thou
sands, and especially stu
dents from neighboring
counties including Pickens.
