LCSO INCIDENT REPORT SUMMARY
Compiled from a summary of incident reports com
pleted by Lamar County deputies during the period
June 9-15, 2021.
On June 9, Sgt. Keith Kendrick was notified by
Sheriff Brad White of complaints of drug activity at
119 Lovejoy Road. Kendrick and other deputies went
to the location and encountered 54-year-old Keith D.
Jones as he walked out of a camper. Staci A. Shef
field, 45, and Daniel Gatlin followed Jones out of the
camper. Kendrick detected the odor of raw and burnt
marijuana.
Kendrick explained why deputies were there and
Jones denied knowledge of drug activity. He said
there were no drugs or firearms in the camper.
Kendrick asked for IDs and Jones had to go back in
the camper to get his. Kendrick followed him to the
door and again smelled marijuana. Sheffield spoke up
and said the deputies smelled marijuana because she
had some weed and partially smoked blunts in the
camper.
Jones refused to allow a search without a warrant.
Kendrick contacted Sgt. Kathryn Knapp who acquired
a signed warrant and came to the premises with it. A
search followed. Deputies found a loaded .22 caliber
revolver, a syringe loaded with liquid meth, partially
smoked blunts, spoons and cotton balls with meth
residue, a blue metal container with meth in it, and
a prescription bottle of the pain reliever gabapentin
prescribed to a person not present.
Once all the contraband was found, Jones claimed
ownership and said Sheffield knew nothing about the
drugs. Jones went to jail charged with possession
of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of a
firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm
during the commission of a felony and possession of
a Schedule V controlled substance.
Sheffield was arrested on charges of possession of
meth, possession of marijuana and possession of a
Schedule V controlled substance. Gatlin turned over
a .20 gauge shotgun that he said he bought for $20 a
few days earlier. He could not recall from whom he
bought the weapon. Gatlin was left at the property
to care for animals there in the absence of Jones and
Sheffield.
On June 10, Lt. Michael Newman was dispatched
to a home at 142 Shawnee Trail as part of a death
investigation. A male subject was deceased at the
scene. He had a history of medical issues and no foul
play was detected. The scene was turned over to the
coroner.
On June 10, Dep. Justyn Weaver was dispatched to
the area of Walton Road and Red Oak Drive regarding
an ongoing problem with four Rottweillers running
loose which were thought to have attacked and killed
dogs and other livestock in the area. Sheriff White,
Capt. Chris Webster, Lt. Mike Newman and animal
control officers joined him. Several previous attempts
to catch the dogs were unsuccessful.
At some point, the deputies learned the dogs were
back inside the owner’s fence at 138 Red Oak Dr. A
woman at the home voluntarily turned to dogs over
to animal control because she “was tired of dealing
with them”.
On June 10, Dep. Weaver was dispatched to a
home at 954 County Line Road regarding an ongoing
dispute between the tenants there and their landlord.
There was an existing civil case on the matter pend
ing in magistrate court.
On June 13, just after 11:30 a.m., Sgt. Wayman Hen
son was patrolling the Hwy. 36 bypass area when he
observed a silver BMW without a functioning brake
light and stopped it. The driver, Nasir K. Ali, 26, had
only an instructional permit. He said he was leav
ing his girlfriend’s house to travel back to Gwinnett
County. Henson pointed out he was going the wrong
way to get to his destination but he replied his GPS
routed him that way.
In that his permit required a licensed driver over
age 21 to be with him, Ali was cuffed and placed in
the rear of a patrol car. Henson went to shut off the
ignition of the BMW when he heard Ali tapping on the
glass of the patrol unit.
Ali then told Henson there was marijuana and a
handgun in a black bag in the back seat of the car. A
loaded Glock 44 was found along with a bag of weed.
A check revealed Ali was a convicted felon. He went
to jail charged with a brake light violation, no license,
possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm
by a convicted felon.
