County hopes its dependence on
TAN financing has come to an end
WALTER GEIGER

County administrator
Sean Townsend hopes
the days of depending
on tax anticipation note
(TAN) financing are over
and told the commis
sioners just that at their
regular meeting Nov. 16.
For years the county has
borrowed money in the
spring and summer for
operations and later paid
it back when property
tax revenues rolled in in
the fall.
Townsend has been
working to cut borrow
ing since he was hired.
This year, the county
borrowed $973,061 and
has already paid it back
in full.
“It is my hope to elimi
nate the TAN in 2022,”
Townsend said.
Commissioner Ryran
Traylor reported his cal
culations indicated the
county has paid $206,000
in interest on TAN notes
over the past several
years.
All the commissioners
praised Townsend for his
efforts. “This is the best
financial shape we have
been in,” commissioner
Nancy Thrash said.
In other business, the
county:
•Officially accepted
the results of the
TSPLOST referendum
which was approved by
voters Nov. 2. The new
one cent sales tax will be
collected beginning April
1, 2022.
•Approved routine
minutes.
•Reappointed six
members to the Barnes-
ville Library board for
two-year terms. They
are Pam Bryan, Diane
