HON- WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN,
The great democratic leader in the last presidential campaign and the idol of the
democratic hosts in the coming contest, will address the people of Georgia in
BARNESVILLE, TUESDAY. JULY 4M. AT 10 O’CLOCK fl- M.
Mayor W. 8- Smith, president of the Chautauqua Association, has been in corres
pondence with Mr. Bryan for some time and Tuesday received a telegram from Mr.
Bryan saying that he would be here on July 4th. It has created the greatest possible enthu
siasm. The directors and citizens propose to give Mr. Bryan the greatest ovation he has
ever received in this section of the country. Preparations are alreadv being made for the
greatest demonstration seen in the south in years. At least ten thousand people will be
present to participate in the magnificent tribute that will be paid the distinguished statesman,
and peerless democratic leader.
IJfser’s Springs.
Mr. C. L. Liisey was in Barnesville
Monday from Lifsey’s Springs and he
stated that the Springs would be in
better condition this year than ever
for affording enjoyment for the peo
pie who visited there. The pools are
in fine condition and Mr. Lifsey is
putting up a large accommodation
hall, 30 x 60 teet, for the convenience
ar.d pleasure of the guests. In this
hall a number of games, such as car
roms, crokinole, etc., will be kept for
enjoyment of the public. Ihe hotel
there will be run by Mr. and Mrs.
M, B. Earle, who promise to give the
public the very best attention and
satisfaction. Lifsey s Springs is be
coming year by year, more popular
as a resort and Mr. Lifsey states that
the prospects now are brighter than
ever before.
A Card of Thanks.
I wish to say that I feel under last
ing obligations for what Chamberlain s
Cough Remedy has done for our fam

cases of coughs, lung trouble and
whooping cough, and it has always
given the most perfect satisfaction, we
feel greatly indebted to the manfact
urers of this remedy and wish them to
please accept our hearty thanks.—
Respectfully. Mrs. S. Doty, Des

Baby Boy Dead.
The many friends of Mr. and Mrs.
Whit Huff sympathize deeply with
them in the loss of their baby boy,
Rogers Huff, who died Sunday morn
ing about 8:30 o’clock.
The sweet little boy was 18 months
old, and the parents were very fond
of him. He was just at a most inter
esting age.
The funeral took place at 9:30
o'clock yesterday morning from their
residence in East Rome. Dr. Gcet
chius and Dr. Headden conducted
the service jointly.
A large number of sympathizing
friends of Mr. and Mrs. Huff were
present at the funeral.—Rome I rib

BARNESVILLE, GA., THURSDAY, JUNE 1, 1899.
To the Memory of Walter
W- SpenGe.
I cannot let the opportunity pass
to say something about my late friend,
Walter Spence, in as much as I was
not present to show my love and es
teem for him by placing flowers upon
his grave. Words will live longer
than flowers though from lips so un
worthy of the sentiment.
Walter Spence was as true a man
as ever lived. He was a friend wor
thy of any trust or confidence, honest
with himself and fellow man.
I had the pleasure of knowing him
well. His loving temperament,
pleasant address and thorough gen
tlemanness won almost every one.
I knew him in his home life and that
he loved and honored his parents,
was fond of his sisters and brothers
was evident at all times.
Jn his death many have cause for
sorrow. His bright sunny disposition
was the life of his companions and
all will miss him.
I feel that I have lost my very
best friend and while I am older he
has often given me very wise councel
and on many occasions has his advice
been ot great weight with me.
He was a perfect gentleman and
my heart aches when I think of
the solemn fact that I will never see
him again on this earth. May God
bless his death to the good of his
loved ones and hundreds of friends
and admirers. J. M, Cochran.
The Barnesville. Blues-
The Barnesville Blues will contiuue
to exist as a military company. A
company of new men has been en
rolled and by this time next week it
will probably be enlisted in the state
service again and be regularly or
ganized. Some weeks ago, captain
John F. Howard, for a long time cap
tain, and Mr. Robert L. Swatts in
terested themselves in organizing the
company and their efforts have been
successful. A meeting was held
Monday evening and nominations
were made for officers of the new
company, and a state officer will be
in Barnesville some time next week
to muster the men into the state
service. It is a splendid set of men
and will make a fine company. The
following is the roll of the company,
with the officers nominated:
Captain, R. L. Swatts; Lieuten
ants, 11. M. Fletcher, J. Lawrence
Hunt; Privates, 1). L. Anderson, H.

Baud Entertainment.
On Friday evening June 9th, at
Gordon Institute auditoriam, an en
tertainment will be given for the
benefit of the Gordon Institute Cadet
Band. A fine progrant will be pre
sented by members of the band as
sisted by Miss Lovelace and Miss
Lockhart. The band needs some
financial help and it deserves all that
it needs. It is a credit to the insti
tute and to Barnesville. The enter
tainment will be largely musical, but
there will be some specialties on the
program. The boys will have a cake
walk, some minstrel performances
and other good things. The admis
sion will be 25 cents, school children
15 cents each or two for 25 cents.
Let all the i>eople of Barnesville at
tend and help the band. It is worthy
and should be encouraged. Go out
to the entertainment without fail.
Re-elected for Another Year.
At a meeting last week of the
Board of Education of the public
school system % of Gainesville, Miss
Jean Mitchell, of Barnesville, was re
elected teacher for another year. She
taught there the past term and pleas
ed all the officials and patrons. The
spring session closed two weeks ago.
The little Dutch J
boy who stopped tile
leak in the dike with
school readers, how
he was walking along /
the dike when he
heard a faint sound
of trickling water.
and knew at once that
a leak had sprung in that great embank
ment which saves Holland from the devas
tations of the hungry sea. It was early in
t the night, and no one was near at hand.
The leak was small when he found it, but
he knew that the action of the water would
enlarge it long before morning, and wash
away the entire embankment, inundate the
country and destroy his own and thou
sands of homes. So he bravely put his
finger in the crevasse, and kept it there all
the long night through, until help came and
the opening was properly stopped. He had
saved his country.
Equally insignificant is the entrance of
disease into the human system. The be
ginnings of the most terrible ailments are
so small they can be easily stopped at the
start. Your health is a dike which keeps
out and stops the inroads of dangerous and
devastating disease. Whenever it breaks
down, no matter how slightly, there is an
opening for disease to enter. If the open
ing is not watched, it will grow larger,
until the sweep of disease overwhelms
you, and health and perhaps life is de
stroyed forever.
Fortify your health with Dr. Pierce’s
Golden Medical Discovery, and you can
defy ill-health. You can make your health
so strong a bulwark that disease cannot
find a crevice through which it can creep.
Taken in time, Dr. Pierce’s remedies pre
vent greater and more serious troubles.
Hundreds write daily to Dr. Pierce, telling
him how these remedies have saved them
and made them strong.
Constipation causes and aggravates many
serious diseases. It is speedily cured by
Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets.
