Hints for Homemakers

Make Your Cut Flowers
Last Longer
Whether cut flowers come
from your garden or a florist,
their life span can be length
ened if given this special
treatment from the moment
they are picked or received.
Cutting: Flowers should be
cut preferably in the evening
or very early in the day .A
slanting cut with a sharp tool
will increase water absorp
tion.
Stem Treatment: Immedi
ately after cutting stem, place
it in water. There are certain
stem structures that require
special treatment before put
ting in water. For instance,
the bases of woody and semi
woody stems (such as lilacs,
roses and chrysanthemums)
should be scraped and split an
inch or two to aid water ab
sorption. Too, the ends of the
stems that have a milky sap
(such as poppies and poin
settias) should be seared with
a flame for about 15 seconds
to stop bleeding- Or. if indoors
you can dip them in boiling
water for a few seconds while
protecting the flower and fol
iage from steam. It is prefer
able to treat stems when they
are first cut.
Conditioning: It is neces
sary to insure long-lasting
floral arrangements. Leave
the flowers 1 in deem water and
set in a dark, cool, draft-free
room for several hours or
overnight.

time from the container. Strip
| all soft foliage below the wat
|er level; arrange the flowers
(quickly and carefully. Always
use a clean, rustproof vase or
receptacle.
Unless you maintain as near
ideal conditions as possible for
your display, the initial treat
ment will be useless. Flowers
keep longer in a cool room. An
occasional fine misty spray of
water on the foliage will help
liven it up. Too, flowers will
last longer if they are not ex
posed to drafts or direct sun
light.
Some experts advise cutting
stems and changing water
every day or two to discour
age bacterial growth which
clogs stem ends and prevents
water from entering.

You received us warmly into

prospered. The decision to sell
our business and leave was
not easy to make, but requir
ed much deliberation.
Our memories will be treas

wish for all of our friends, a
long, happy and prosperous
