Gueas onr correspondents arc too much
exorcised on the earlliqitake question to write
this week.
- Col. D. M. Roberta,and his partner. Smith,
of Eastman, were in attendance upon the au
ditor’* court here yesterday.
I
—Mr*. Cranie Mcßae and her pretty daitgli
er. Mis* Mamie, who were visiting relatives in
Tatnall last week, have returned home.
—rip»»e notice tlio announcement of 31. A.
McQueen, to be found in onr column* to-day.
Mae . is a young man of popularity, clever and i
competent. He will make the tacc track hot |
for pomcbntly.
—We fall into lino on the proportion of nur :
correspondent "Parvus Animus," in to-day’s j
paper, and are ready to take anythin r that man !
or beast can use, undor it, and to publish the J
new* articles.
Since our last issue, another patriot has |
e/ime to the front, wlio propose* to furnish the |
nail* to bn Id onr house. A* son as tlio deed to t
the lot is executed, we will make out a bill of;
the lumber, and put the hall in motion.
An auditor’s court was held lu re lybster
day. in the case of Douglas v* Douglas, pend
ing in the Superior court of this county. Col.
C. C. Smith auditor. DeLaceyA Bishop for
plaintiff; Roberts A Smith for defendant.
Our friends Everett Adam* and Eddie
Roger*, in company with Andrew Collin*,
colored, went snaking last Ftiday, and killed
26 rattlesnakes. The largest one was 5 feet 8
inches in length, ami had 14 rattles. The oth
er* ranged from 12 to IS inches in length, and
had a bntton each.
—Hnn. John D. McLeod, of Lumber City, j
who is a candidate for the Senate of the 15th j
district, was in town Tuesday. He is a ge
nial, jovial, good hearted fellow, kind and ac
rommodationg. He has more good traits of
character than’most anybody, and fewer had
onea. There’s nothing little about him.
Entertainment.—
—An entertainment will ho given, under the
auspices of Mt. Vernon Sabbath School, some
titnt in the latter part of this month or the
first of next, for the purpose of raising money
to bny an organ for the Sunday School.’Notice
will be given of the time and nature of the en
tertainment, in due time.
—Col. Tom Eason, of McVille, visited our
office on yesterday. He is a candidate for
Solicitor General, and is strongly endorsed
throughout the circuit. He filled the office |
once, and filled it most ably, and as he formerly j
lived here, he is without question the choice of
our people. He ha* a host ol friend* in this
rountv, and if the choice lay with the people,
he would carry this county by an overwhelm
ing vote.
—The sermon of Rev. W. A. Jones, at the
Presbyterian church last Sunday, was an ex
ceptionally fine piece of pulpit oratory. It was
upon the subject that was uppermost in the
minds of all hi* hearers, earthquakes, and was
replete with information, show ing a full know l
edge atnl mastery of his subject. Hi* conclu
sions were logical, and ably enforced. Alto
gether it was an intellectual and religion* feast
such a* we have seldom been permitted to en
joy.
—Several of onr weekly exchanges of the
2nd and 3rd, came to ns this week that con
tained no reference whatever to the earth
quake. We do not understand that kind of
J.rarnalisin. That the most astounding anil
heart rending event that ha* ever occurred
upon this continent since its inhabitation by
man should take place, and a newspaper pub
i.hed two day* after the oeenrren^e—in some
instances on the lino of the railroad and tele
graph--should not even allnde to it. i qui*.
