THE MONITOR.
A Plunge Into the Oconee.
At an early hour yesterday
morning just before time for the
passing of the east bound passen
ger train No. 74, the whistles of
two steamboats were heard signal
ing for the draw bridge to swing
open to allow them to pass up the
river. A through freight came
thundering along at a rapid rate
from Helena, and though signaled
to stop at Ochwalkee, which is
quite near the river, did not slack
en its speed until the red flag of
the watchman was sighted. See
ing they emild not bring the train
to a stop before reaching the
bridge, the engineer and fireman
leaped off and left the train to
take an early bath in the red
waters of the Oconee. The brakes
having been put. on with all the
power they could exert, brought
the train to a slow pace; but did
not stop till the engine and two
cars had made a clear leap into the
open draw. The engine is in twen
ty feet of water with a card load
of cotton on top of it and the
second car is some distance down
the river and just visible above the
water. No one hurt except a ne
gro brakoman, and he was only
slightly wounded. We are infor
med that the engineer was not at
all familiar with the road, this
being his second trip.
The faithful old watchman, C.
X. Smoot, sat. complacently on
the.middle of the swinging span
while the engine and cars were
stirring up the cat fish almost un
der him.

quite old, to hand him his gun.
The two accomplices, who were
marching out with the trunk,
reached up and took the gun from
a rack and made their escape w ith
