THE MONITOR.
PLANT SHADE TREES.
Let the Citizens Interest Themselves In This
important Matter.
We are apt to forget during
these winter days that we will not
be courting the sunshine when the
roasting days of July and August;
come. The few gigantic oaks up
on our streets have played upon
the harps of too many wintry
blasts, and are falling into de-|
cay. Young trees should line out
side walks and avenues if we
would enhance the beauty of our
town, and provide for the comfort
of the coming generation. No
better opportunity to perform a
purely unselfish act exists than
the planting of a tree whose grate
ful shadow will cool the brow and
quicken the foot-step of |pme pil
grim when our own pilgrimage is
ended. Plant trees now and lend
a helping hand and a spade or
grubbing hoe to your neighbor
that he may also engage in the
same good work.

WANTED—MANY MORE HOUSES.
There are some things we learn from the public prints and others
from mingling with our neighbors. We know some things by in
tuition and guess at. lots of other things. But we run square up on
some facts by personal experience. In coming to the highly favored
town of Mt. Vernon to live we have laid it impressed uppn us in a
very positive manner that there is great lack of residences. In fact,
we have had to rent a farm entirely outside the town limits to even
get to stop in the county. That a number of houses might be erected
here and filled with paying tenants seems to bo conceded 113- every
one. People who are looking for paying investments, and are sat is
fied with a sure interest of ten or twelve per cent, on their money,
need not be looking for the thousand and one clap trap schemes
that Hood the countiy while such opportunities as this lie right under
our noses.
The town or village with not a single residence in it. to be rented
is a full town, it is true; but t.hc possibility of its growth is cut. olf
short if thore can be no addition to its happy homes and prosperous
business houses. That building lots, and lands in general, are
cheaper now than they will ever be again in this country is a fact
that need not bo told any man who knows anything at all of the
laws of supply and demand. With a delightful climate and beauti
fully rolling bills and clear babbling brooks, and a snil that yields
bountifully of every crop planted in it, wo can not ask Providence to
do more for us. But, with these happy surroundings and nature’s
bountiful inheritance, it. remains with the people of t his town, or any
other town, to say whether they will expand into a thriving, purs por
ous community and prove a blessing to numbers who would gladly
make their home with them, or just wait for another generation to
prove their appreciation of the blessings of a great Creator's hand.
The senior editor of this paper has no real estate to sell, no axe
to grind for anybody, and is really thankful that Sheriff Higgs did
not have to open up a suite of l ooms in the county jail for the accom
modation of the family; but the restless, “uneasiness” that prompts
these lines would be more easily understood if Monitor readers knew
how narrow has been the escape of tins poor man from being trans
formed into an agriculturalist while on the very threshold of Georgia
journalism. With squeaking pigs and cackling hens and a thousand
incentives to woo us to the joys of farm life, and the good lady of
the household calling on us to dig up the garden and build chicken
coops of elegant and modern design, and mapping out enough work
to make our back ache, we just bad to say something.
