modern dentistry
It has been said that a man is as old
as his heart, True no doubt, but it is
just as true and more comprehensive
to say, “ A man is as good as his
teeth.”
It has been demonstrated with ever
increasing proof that the condition of
the heart, of the digestive tract, of the
nervous system, of our whole equipt
ment is intimately bound up with the
condition of thirty-two bony instru
ments with which we masticate our
food.
With the growing realization of
this fact, the profession dedicated to
the care, preservation and remedy of
these organs, has come to occupy
even a higher plant of importance in
the prevention of many diseases to
which the human race is heir.
Few generations ago, the human
tooth was regarded as nothing more
than a bit of bone with a crown and
root, to be used as long as it did not
pain, to be pullled as soon as it gave
trouble. And for this radical remedy,
a strong fingered barber was consid
ered adequate. Today, thanks to the
profession of sicence. We know that
a tooth is really a very complicated
and far reaching structure, whose
preservation and health is of the ut
most importance to the human race,
as to the individual, and therefore
worthy of the most distinguished
study and practice.
Rapid progress is being made In
lines of human indeavor, and the
most progressive men in the Dental
profession have kept time and per
fect step to the march of progress,
and its leaders have contributed lib
erally to the healing art.
Some comprehension of the growth
of the profession may be had when it
is realized that the last census show
ed about forty thousand practitioners
of Dentistry in this country alone, of
whom approximately thirty-five thous
and are affiliated with the Dental
Societies.
Dental Clinics and dental research
work are being constructed on ex
tensive scale throughout the country,
and foremost in this work are the
members of the Georgia State Dental
Society, which meets in Atlanta in
June. —Contributed.
