FROM IRE m
Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 3.—
P. H. Fitzgerald of Indianapolis,
Ind., the founder of the old sol
diers’ colony located at and
about Fitzgerald, Irwin county,
Georgia, has just closed a deal
with Brobston, Findig & Co., a
real estate firm of this city Where
by he has purchased colony, 50,000 which acres
of land fora new
he has organized to bring to
Georgia. The lands are located
along the .St. Mary’s river, in
Charlton county, twenty seven
miles from Jacksonville, and ad
jacent to the Georgia bouthern
and Flofida Railway,
This new force of settlers has
been recruited from the North
west and Middle Western states
and numbers several thousand
people, Those familiar with
the country which has been
selected state that it is one of
the best sections in the South.
A city will be laid out at
once along the banks of the St.
Mary’s river and will be named
St. George. Surveyors under
the direction of Capt.G.C.Welch
the manager of the old soldiers’
colony, will commence work at
ohce. About 400 members of
the new colony have already
reached Georgia and are now
waiting for the survey and allot
ment of colony land. It is esti
mated that by April 1, 1905, not
less than 8,000 to 10,000 people
will be located along the St.
Mary’s river.
Largest Moter in the World.
The largest moters in the
world are in use in the huge for
ests of Canada, where they are
used to drag logs over the snow
and rough roads. They were
specially designed for the pur
pose by a Chicago man. One
of these machines is capable of
dragging a train of 200 tons
weight of logs at a speed of 12
miles an hour. It is the only
machine in existence which will
draw a heavy load through three
feet of snow and over stumps
and logs a foot in height. It is
25 tons weight and 200 horse
power. It travels on four run
ners, with a traction wheel in
the center weighing seven tons.
The machinery is inclosed in a
boxlike affair, giving the moter
a somewhat strange appearance
as it makes way along forest
roads.

What Americans Eat.
It is figured out that in 1850
a hundred Americans ate 94
sheep, 11.8 hogs and 25 beaves,
whereas in 1900 they consumed
about 50 sheep, 3 hogs and 30
beaves. Cheese has declined,
but if eggs and poultry are in
cluded with burter and milk as
belonging to the dairy class, the
consumption of food of that kind
is three times what it was forty
years ago. In 1840 100 persons
ate 430 bushels of oats, and in
1890 the breakfast food move
ment was small to what it is to
day. The general gain in vege
table expense is 80 per cent.
Meat still leads, although, it ap
parently will not do so long.
Americans have grown healthier
i 1 the half century which has
seen this change, probably, how
ever, on account of more air anc
exercise and better cooking anc
sanitation.
