Baptist and Methodist
Lead at University
Athene Ga., Oct. 3. —Students
of the Baptist denomination are
most numerous at the University
«
of Georgia, and they are closely
seconded by those of Methodist
church membership, according to!
a report made by T. W. Reed, reg
istrar of the University, after the
enrollment of the first thousand I
students today. Of the first thou
sand men and women registered,
323 were members of the Baptist
church and 102 expressed prefer
ence for the Baptist church al
though not members of the de-j
nomination.
Tlte Methodist church has sent
252 men to the University of Geor
gia, and 44 others stated that they
preferred that denomination.
Ninety-four Presbyterians are en
rolled, 16 Catholics, 44 Episcopa
lians, 23 Christians, 29 members of,
Jewish Synagpgues, and there is!
a scattering representation from
the Congregational, Lutheran, Uni
yersalist, Unitarian, Reformed and
Christian Science churches.
More than ninety per cent of
the students are either church
members or express preference
for the services of some particular
denomination. This is in accord
with the statistics of the past few
years which have shown church
membership for 85% of the stu
dent body. So large is the enroll
ment of Baptists that the denomi
nation has considered establishing
a student pastor on the campus.
All the churches of Athens make
a special effort to care for the
University student body, providing
special classes and organizations
for the college men and women.
Ministers ofall denominations were
in official attendance at the open
ing exercises University to extend
the Students a welcome.
The registration of the first thou
sand students was completed
sooner in the week than has usu
ally been the case. It indicates
that the student body this year
will number about 1500, an in
crease of s.eyeral hundred over
last year.

We, the trustees of the colored school, wish to
express our sincers thanks to all of our white friends
who so generously helped us last year on our Rally
Day, in trying to pay for our new school house. Ow
ing to the financial depression this year, we do not
wish to annoy you with a personal appeal, but will
appreciate any gift, large or small, to apply on the
Rally Day fund. On October J Oth, second Sunday at
the school house, 2 p. m., S. S. Supervisor, Walter B.
Hill, will address us and all of our white friends are
cordially invited to be present.

A Cash Crop.
The-dairy cow with her wonder
ful wealth producing ability, stands
out conspicuously among all farm
animals in the readjustment follow
ing in the descolate path of boll
weevil. The advantage she holds
is due primarily to her wondeful
digestive system and her economy
in converting coarse forage, grain
and by products into a most nour
ishing and palatable human food.
Carefully conducted expariment
have taught us that for each 100
pounds of digestible matter con
sumed, the cow on an average,
will yield about 139 pounds of miik
containing' about 18 pounds of
solids, practically all of which is
digestible. The pig is able to pro
duce 15 6 pounds of edible solids,
for each 100 pounds of digestible
dry matter consumed. Chickens
produce 5.1 pounds of edible sol
ids in the form of eggs from the
same amount of feed. The lamb
yields 3.2 pounds and the steer
only 2.8 pounds of digestible solids.
Thh Agricultural College throgh
its extension Force is urging the
small farmer to start keeping a
few cow's and marketing the prod
uct in a systematic wav so as to
take a minimum of their time and
still give them the maximum net
in cash return. The farmer with
from 3 to 7 cows should not con
sider himself a dairyman, but rath
er he should consider the small
holding of cows a part of his gen
eral farm work. Their principal
functions will pe te provide a prof
itable home market for cheap
home grown feeds, leave the fer
tility on the farm and produce
enough ready cash to pay the ordi
nary running exanses.
Such a development will require
a very small outlay of additional
capital. On most farms, there
are a few cows to which no par
ticuler attention is being paid and
no systmatic effort made to con
vert their products into cosh It
may be necessary to buy a few
cows in local territory, but at this
time these can be had at a very
small cost. They should be regu
larly and abundantly fed on cheap
home gromn feeds. The one big
gest investment will be for a hand
separator. This is most essential
if the farmer expects to get the
greatest profit out of his cows.
It will also be necessary for him
to purchase a sew cans for ship
ping the cream. A coyenient but
inexpensive shelter should be ar
ranged for the cows.
