Vrohitflton Proverbs.
Call that aa '‘industry’’ which
Musts a thousand homes to make
one man rich.”
To call men “funa tic*” for fightr
ing the liquor traffic; as well call
firemen fanatics for fighting fire.
The bulk of the ignorance and
depravity in every community is
the strenght of the saloon.
The success of the liqqor power
is measured by its influence to
suppress Christianity.
Kansas under prohibition in
creased in her population half a
million in five years—more rapidly
tbun any state in the union. What
ubout this, Captain Ilowell?
Kansas under prohibiton since
1880 nearly doubled her popula
tion, more than doubled her
railroads, her school houses and
the value of real and personal
property. What do you think of
that?
Free men against a free Gospel
£s the liquor dealers’ platform.
Prohibition is the only remedy
the liquor men fear and fight, and
this proves its might and right:-
£lubc Arnold calls the advocates
of prohibition “base villains.”
Livingston Mims says he has more
respect for the devils in hell than
for preachers who speak for pro
hibition.” How is this for abuse
and vituperation?
The salloon obeyp no law but
the law of greed.
To give license to liquor is to
give liberty to lawlessness.
Prohibition makes no widows,
no orphans, no beggars. Cun the
paloon say as much?
Give Them Ten Years
The Savannah News tells a
story of scouudrclism in that
city that demands extreme
punishment. The Arkwright fac
tory there provides employment
for a large number of poor—prin
cipally women and children. Its
superintendent, a Mr. Lyons, of
Phindopbia, has been constantly
threatened by ruffians since his
.coming there, a year since. Ilia
predecessor was dragged from -the
’mill with a rope about bis neck
and led to the canal by the same
parties, but WAS saved from »
promised ducking by passcres-by
On Monday, these men, OBan-
non, llostick and Warren, en
tered the mill, brandishing pistols
and knives, drove every one out apd
proceeded to play the vully gen
erally.
They cut the warps in the looms,
poured water on the machinery,
drovo their knives through the
doors, and demolished everything
they could destrov. The News
says that O’Bannon was arrested,
ii nd fined for drunkenness and dis
orderly conduct, hut does not state
fhe amount of his fine, or make
mention of any action concerning
liis associates.
t\s the result of his experience,
Mr. Lyons says that lfis year -will
bo out next month, and he will
then return North. He adds that
J»e would not go through what he
has during the past year for the
whole mill.
Any punishment short of hang
ing would not be too severe for
these brutes, and there are more
fit the same character who should
be looked after. The man Ly°fi s
is a Northern man, a skilled me
chanic, who left the North prepared
to make his home in the South,
fie finds it impossible, and returns
North again with a terrible story
of his treatment at the hands of
Southerners in the thriving city of
j?avannah. There are thousand
fit pcppl^ in the North who are
quick .tp i&tpfi at such a story and
pinkc capita} pf it.
These scoundrels are not South
erners, poy Jhey represent
• Southern sentiment, yet th^Squth
gets the credit of it all. Tip in
telligent people of the South are
United in the desire for respectable
immigration, and they are Also
cognizant of the fact the most
desirable settlers can be obtained
ffojn the North. Every act of the
pharactej: above described, is an
jnjury to the entire South, and the
- perpetrators should be punished
to the utmost limit of the law-
