THE HERALD 18 THE
Official Organ of tho United States
Court of the Southern District of
Georgia.
WAYCROS8, GA., FEB. 13, 1911.
A man seldom gets' to the front by
going back on his friends.
Even u homely girl believes a man
when he tells her she Is beautiful.
Probably there Is nothing more in
dustrious than an Idle tumor.

A stranger can make a hit in any

Helpless a man without a collar

pin.
Atlanta, Feb. 11. (Special.)—The
man whoso weather last night, was
cool, and cloudy, may rest easy for
the time being as to the fate of bis
fruit crop.
But if it was cool, anJ not cloudy,
and there was a frost, be might as
well figure that hfs peaches won't
amount to much.
Never before In the history ot the
peach industry in Georgia has the
outlook for a crop been so precarious, i
I-ast night tile peaches simply hung
by a thread. After the protracted
warm spell of the last few weeks
they had budded out In many local!- j
ties, reaching a stage where even a
light frost would will tho young and
tender signs of renewed life, and it
was simply a question of waiting and
hoping.
Yesterday the temperature In At
lanta dropped to 36 degrees, wheras
on Thursday it was 52. There was a
ifpoportinnate decline of the iner
cury throughout the state.
The present condition of the buds
Is inch that they have a chance to
pull through if there Is not a late,
heavy frost. Brisk winds will keep
the moisture In the buds dried out,
and It will take a heavy frost to
freeze them, as nestling in their lit
tle “nests" they are kept warmer
than it would seem, and can with
stand cold to a remarkable degree.
But summing up the whole situa
tion, it is practically certain that the
peach crop in Georgia this year will
pan out short of what It. would have
been had tho unseasonable warm
spell not lasted so long.
