WONDERFUL RECORD OF A CASE
CAR IN A DE8ERT ROAD RACE
130 MILE8 FROM PROENIX,
ARIZONA TO TUCSON,
ARIZONA.
The average speed of 26 miles an
hour from Los Angeles, California to
Phoenix, Arizona, for the desert road
race run In 1910 was considered mar
velous and a portion of this race was
run over the finest boulevards In the
world. This serves as a background
to show the wonderfu lperformance of
the Case car driven by F. W. Brong,
jn the Phoenlx-Tucson Race. This
little car made a remarkable average
speed of 28.88 miles per hour. The
entire ran was made across deserts
and over trails which followed the'
Gila, Salt and Santa Crux Rivers. The
trail crossed four rivers and as there
were no bridges the machines forded
the streams, and a number of times
the water was over hub deep. The
entries for this race were a Case,
driven by Brong; a Pope-Hartford,
FOR RENT—Rooms at 33 Reed driven by Redewell; a Buick, driven
street 3 3t by Boulard; Elmore, driven by Nor
ris; and a Stoddard-Dayton; a Tour
ist 50, Columbia. Ohio and Rambler.
These last four were withdrawn on
account of the bad conditions of the
road.
An Idea of the pace that was set
by the Case car in this race can bj
figured from the fact that the Elmore
car, while vainly endeavoring to fol
low the pace of the Case, over-turned
and was completely wrecked, and the
driver, Norris, was very lucky to es
cape fatal Injuries. f~~
The first reports that Phoenl&had
of the race were from the ford on the
Salt River at Temple. The river waa
found to be over a hundred feet wide
and several feet deep where the mo-
ers crossed and at thla point the Caae
car was leading. At Mesa, 18 miles
from Phoenix, the Case car was hold
ing Its lead easily. The Case was
first by Buchanan’s Wells In the de
sert at 7:45 In the morning. At Kiln
aman’s Wells the Case had lengthen
ed Its lead. At Florence where the
racera had to ford th Gila river the

there Is nnothcr improvement that
might be made In many of these plac
