AVIATION MEET.
The Fitzgerald Aviation Meet Is
like the Valdosta and Waycross
meets, a complete failure, as far as
flying Is concerned. It is a strange
thing that the promotor or promotors
cl this enormous swindle can go
from town to town and continue to
f ( ol all the people. We could excuse
the men from flying In Valdosta but
there was no excuse for them not fly
ing In Waycross, except the cold feet
they possessed.
These aviators, who came as “high"
flyers, to “soar*’ over Valdosta, Way-
cross, and are now at Fitzgerald try
ing to "soar". These men who flew
2,000 feet in the air at Waycross?
Can’t they really fly? It Is a question
if these would-be-bird-men ever got
over 50 feet off of the ground, and
then light with a bump, as It wert»,
in Waycross. Not the graceful glide
at* described by other aviators who
have been flying In other parts of
the country.
We do not propose to be unjUBt to
any one, but someone should be pun
ished for perpetrating such a .twin-
die tm the good people ot these three

EXIT BALLINGER.
Richard A. Ballinger, secreary ol
the interior, has finally bowed to pop
ular senMment and resigned his port
folio. He Is succeeded by Walter L
Fisher, u prominent Chicago lawyer,
a Republican, and vice president of
the National Conservation assoelar
turn, of which Gifford Pint-hot is pres
iuent. He is said to be a staunch
supporter of Mr. Pinchot in the lat-
Ur’s work for tho preservation of nn
tural resources.
Mr. Ballinger’s resignation had been
In* the hands of tho president since
January 19. In accepting it the lat
ter takes occasion to reiterate his
faith In the integrity of the secrota
ry’s motives and to express his Indig
nation at what he declares has been
an “unscrupolus conspiracy for defa
mation of character.” He could not
tay otherwise without sultlfylng him
self. Tho president lias taken Bal
linger for granted from tho commen
cement of the sensational controversy
which began with his mismanagement
•ct tho public lnnds and wound up,
after his exposure in the Cunningham
coal land claim matter by young Gla-
vis, with, a congressional Investiga
tion In which the. Republican com
mittee members attempted to white
wash him, tho Democratic Insurgent
members of the same committee find
ing him guilty of the charges prefer
red by Clifford Pinchot.
The testimony produced nt the
hearing, published broadcast in the
public press, conclusively proved that
Mr. Ballinger was unfit td hold his
•flleo—Incompetent, If not worse. But
1:1s had no effect upon the president,
who discharged young Glavls for his
exposure, of tho attempted Alaska
steal and later dropped Pinchot be
cause ho Insisted In a proper manage
ment of the land conservation busi
ness of the country.
It Is to he hoped that his successor
will prove u roan of broader scope
of mind and more keenly alive to the
interests of the people.
The money was shipped from Tam
pa yesterday afternoon by the Ex-‘
change National Bank and was con
signed to the Bank of Clearwater.
Postal officials decline to give any
Information until postoffleo detectives
arrive to make an nvestlgaton.
The robbery is supposed to hav
t-cea committeed while fourteen mall
bags for Clearwater and points south
of that city were left lying on the
platform at Tarpon Springs for over
eight hours, waiting for the Atlantic
Coast Line train, which was eight
hours late.

A “harem .skirt" caused what was *
almost a riot in Pits!burg tho other j
day. In one of the state legislatures *
a bill has been introduced to make ^
it a crime for women to wear "ha- 1
rern" skirts. A recent issue
New York paper takes up half
tc show pictures of a young
walking down Fifth avenue wearing
a “harem" skirt. In the picture gap.
in- men and boys are shown. Why
In the name of common sense, is there
i ll of this whoop and hurrah over
the "harem" skirt? It Is not a thing
Id the world but n pair of big, loose,
baggy breeches reaching to the au-
klea. There is nothing Immodest
about It. From the point of view o.
modesty. It Is immaculate as com-
izred with some of the ball gowns
and other thinga that are beln.5 worn.
The fact seems to be that the only
criticism against the "harem" skirt
lr. that It is different from what we
have been used to seeing.—Savannah
