SPEAKING OF BACKBONE.
Madison Advertiser.
Speaking of backbone there Is n
man in Georgia by the name of Jo
seph M. Brown, who seems to have
plenty of It. He was nicknamed by
v'
his enemies a few years ago. "I.lttlo
Joe Brown." and the name so tickled
him that ho immediately adopted It,
and Instead of his enemies it is his
friends that now call him "Little Joe."
He is at present governor; and It
cost the miftlitly Hoke Smith a fab
ulous sum to defeat him for re-elec
tion last year.
Governor Brown handed down a
decision last Saturday that has made
history for our state, and will tong
be remembered. In this decision he
refused to pardon Stripling, the es
caped convict, the history of whose
case in known to every mutt and wo
man In Georgia. This refusal
don by our governor was mnd«
ly In opposition to our pa
board, who had unanimously
mended the man's pardon. I
of this; and tho long petitions for
clemency which followed it. Govern
or Brown remained firm and let the
law take its course.
No maudlin sentiment had the
least influence upon our staunch gov
ernor, who is possessed of n strong
nerve to do the right thing and the
hack-hone to carry tt out. He firm
ly believes in carrying on the man- i
dates of the law. He feels the of- j
fecta of the cheapness of human life
