WAYCROSS EVENINQ HERALD
63.2 MILES ON
5 QTS. GASOLINE
PROBABLY WORLD’S RECORD
MADE WITH WHITE "30.”
On last Wednesday, the White Com*
V*ny through their local agents, the
<Mst Auto Company of Union City,
Ind„ held a gasoline economy contest
Between Union City and Richmond,
• distance of 63.2 miles. A diamond
Ure was the prize offered to the con*
testant who covered the route using
the smallest amount of gasoline. Fif
teen White Gas cars, all owned by
Union City people, were entered for
the event and each driver was accom
panted by an Inspector and two other
passengers to bring the total weight
carried In the body of the car up to
$75 pounds, being the minimum re*
«nlred. Chas. Trltt, Jr., of the firm i
Of GuncVcl-Harlan-Trltt Company won
the contest by covering the 63.2 mile
coarse using only one gallon and
quart of gasoline, an average of 49.33
miles per gallon.
How It Was Dons.
ToTelate the record and not to ex
plain how It was done would fhaure
a boom In the membership of the An-
nan Ins Club. The winner of the con
test gives this explanation. “The
route between Union City and Rich
mond Is a succession of hills. When I
came to the top of a hill would shut
off my engine, release the compres
sion In the cylinders (which you can
not do with any but White cars) and
coast, not only down the hill but for
a long distance on the level and in
some cases the car would get a good
start up a new hill before It would
he noeevsary to give her more gaso
line. My averago speed was twenty-
five miles per hour."
The second best score was made by
H. K. Barrett who averaged 33.43
miles per gallon. The total average
of all the contestants who made the
trip was 28.2 miles per gallon. One
of the cars was driven by Mrs. CorA
Flatter who finished with an average
of 21.98 miles per gallon.
