Frank Farirngton in Brains
gives these helpful suggestions to
- merchants:
There’s a right psychological
moment in the making of every
sale, and a man needn’t study
psychology to recognize it.
Don’t let the over-anxioau sales
man recommend the goods more
highly than the facts warrant.
Goods which fail to dome up to
the recommendation cause lasting
dissatisfaction.
- ' There is no money in promising
J goods sooner than you can deliver
!. them. A disappointed customer
is pretty apt to be a lost customer.
There is no money in promising
goodB osoner than you can deliv
er them. A disappointed custo
mer is pretty apt to be a lost cus
tomer. *
It does pay to offer to get goods
that you don’t have in stock when
asked for. People like to be ac
commodated and they will recom
mend a merehnnt who accommo
dates them.
The storekeeper, like the politi
cian, ought to have'as large a per
sonal acquaintance as possible,
and use it to his advantage.
Keep a file handy for preserv
ing clippings about store manage
ment and advertising. You will
be surprised to see how valuable
it will be at a time when you need
a new idea.
All your clerks should read
your advertising. That will add
about fifty per cent, to its value.
Quality is what counts when the
customer gets the goods home and
begins to use them. Sell the best
quality you can every time.
Don’t be a nonetity in politics,
temperance or religion, but don’t
fargue about those things. Argu
ment only strengthens the opposi
tion and weakens friendship.
If you can’t be patient with an
aggravating customer, let someone
else wait on that customer.
Why stop with showing the cus
tomer the thing asked for! As
long as he stays in the store he’s
a possible further purchaser.
A dingy store may have been all
right inthe dark ages, but it won’t
do any business on the great white
way.
There ia no adevrtisement that
will do you any more good than
one first-class satisfied customer.
Advertising that says one word
for you and a dozen for somebody
else is expensive whatever it costs.
Let the other fellow have the
space on the hotel clock and key
board, etc.
Unoccupied clerks on the front
steps or in the window aren’t the
kind of advertising that pays.
There’s a good deal more in life
than just your store. Think of
other things occasionally and
broaden your horizon. Cultivate
a fad or two.
If you can’t find ways in which
your methods can be improved
over last year, ask any outsider.
One fake sale will spoil your
store for conducting any honest
sales.

FELLOW FEELING.
In a wild dash to catch bis train
a belated suburbanite went leap
ing up tho stairs at dn “L” sta
tion, only to reach the platform
just os the gates were slammed
shut and tho train began to move.
Panting violently, and watching
tho departing train for a moment,
he finally sought to elicit a little
sympathy or comfort from a Ger
man standing by, saya Harper’s
Weekly. Assuming an air of in
difference, he remarked good-nat
uredly, “I didn’t quite make it.’’
“Make vott” inquired the Ger
man, who, apparently, bad not no
ticed anything unusual.
“That train.”
“ Vy dit you vant to make it
ven it vas alretty made!”
(‘No, I mean I -was to lste to
got aboard.” ,
“Vot for you vant a board!”
“No not that; I wanted to take-

How coot you took it ven so
many hat it alretty!”
‘‘No, no, no,” (exoitcdly); “I
mean I wanted to ride on that
train, but didn’t get here soon
enough.”
Just then the German’s train
pulled up to the station, and as he
stepped through the gate he was
heard to reply: “Dot vas too bed;
but how vas it any of my tarn
