WOMEN LAID ONTHE LASH,
Tied a Midnight Visitor to a Tree and Ad.
ministered 4 Severe Thrashing .
Over in Calhoun county the women
seem to know how to take care of
themselves. The following occurrence
there is reported by the Savannah
News:
“In Calhoun county there is a large
plantation managed by two ladies,
One night last week a cowardly sneak
came to their door between midnight
and day and called to them to come to
the door. They askedwho it was, and
his reply was: ‘*Come and see.’ Their
firet impulse was to 2o to the door and
shoot him, but upon second considera
tion they decided it was not best to
open the door for fear of being over
powered and disarmed. So they order
ed him to leave repeatediy. After
some little time they heard his retreat
ing footsteps. They jumped up and
ruszhed to the door and saw from the
moonlight i% wasa white man and saw
‘the direction he wus going. They
burriedly dressed and followed him to
his home, and reached there on foot
just as be was putting up his horse.
They called to him and commanded
him 1t the point of a pistol to march
back, and, by dint of indefatigable
talking and commanding of him to
proceed, finally got back home with
him just as the sun was rising. They
i‘es’c as if it would be a cowardly act to
shoot him after having made him
march back, so they procured a good
strong rope and made him stand per
fectly quiet while they tied him to a
tree and administered a severe thrash
ingn full view of a large crowd of
negroes.”’
