operations clearly ami distinctly, Tho
v ise man, before ho buildeth a lions *,
rounteth the cost—so a farmer beforo
undertuking to make a crop, should
knov perfectly the means and rcstHrr
ces at his command— how much ma
nure, how many (.'ittles. how many
hands, how mnuV pmod ]ihiws hud Oth
er iinp/emoula, how milch corn and
ladder, or hay, and how much bacon,
in the next place, he must, form a
Hound judgement as to the nature and
amount of woik he may reasonably
expect to get front n given number of
I lands. And here, as in all his other
calcufadbns, let him follow the rule of
a mechanic in estimating tho strength
of a machine The strain it will bear
depends upon the weakest point. What
avails it to the farmer it his plows are
good and his mules strong and willing
if his laborers arc lazy and inefficient!
Let not a judgment be formed of how
much a certain number of hands will
do, 1 by what tho same number was
made to do ten years ago —rather let
him* base his estimate on the experi
ence of the last three yours. Perhaps
it will not be out of place to remind the
young farmer that, in calculating how
much land may be pi wed in a given
t me, it should not be forgotten that
the ground will, in all probability, be
niton too wet for the share, aud in ■>ome
localities, frozen too hard. Summing
up f,he number < f days, b tween this
and planting lime, the safe rule would
be to take one-huif inly as available
for plowing. The only wise course is
to base all calculations upon the worse
conditions which may arise—the pru
dent mau foreseeth the evil and hideth
himsolf. The next -point is, to “pitch"
the crop —two considerations: Ist, how
many acres in nil can be col ivated and
how many of these should be given to
each crop. Wo would en erour most
earnest protest against ot«r cropping—
it is not only bad policy as regards the
present years crop, but it is utterly rum
ous to all improve menu A small crop
well cultivated, will make rn re than a
large cno half worked. Don’t eke out,
to one hundred acres of land, manure
which is scarcely enough for fifty—it is
just as bad policy nV to attempt to
maintain one hundred head of cattle i n
a supply of food bar liy enough lor
tiily. Don’t run over, and “scratch’
to a depth of two or Hires inches, orio
hundred acres, but double teams and
plow fifty asres, five or six inches deep.
See some of the results—only half as
much fencing needed— only half as
many hands needed—a good deep,
constantly iinprov ng soil, against one
that i& shallow and c nstan'ly washing
away and di appearing—the laborer
encouraged and stimulated by the rap
id, promising growth of the crop, will
work harder and better, even uncon
sciously to himself—the uncu'tivah and j
land, nature will kindly take charge of j
and soon cover with forests, that will
tend to equalize the temperature and ;
lessor the chances of drought Tho
'2nd point, how many acres should be
assigned each crop, wo approach with
some hesitation Wo are eatisli and a
larger urea ebould be | ut down in clo
ver and grasses, and more oats, bar
ley, a., sown than is usual at present.
Homo made manure and turning in
green crops are the foundations of suc
cessful husbandry—in tno allotment or
land, therefore, enough Bhould, by all
means, be given to the provision crops
to insure an abundance of food, for
everything < n tho* farm. When thir
is done, whatever is left may be as
signed to culluit. Mow, we are pre
pared to go to work. If the stubblo
fields have not been plowed (as they
shodd have been two or three months
ago) start ttie turning plows in them
vbehever the weather aud nature of
the ground permit, aud keep them run
ning. Land dries off so slowly alter
rains during winter, that there is oiten
great temptation to plow when too
roe/. This poiDt should bo most care
fully watched. All weeds and grass
should be nicely povered up —let uota
particle of it bo burned. Hands not
plowing (and all hands when it is too
wet to plow) should be engaged in
putting fences in order, making now
ditches aud cleaning out old ones,
hauling in leaves, muck, &0,, for sta
bltss and mature heap. During rainy
days, plow-stocks, axe aud hoo helves,
and implements generally, may be over
hauied and repaired.

The oven is nearly ns wide at the top as at the hearth line, which not only increases the size, but will be reeogni#td m
a great advantage in baking.
As to Ihe size of the Hues and fire box, which are made to correspond with the very large oven, several months trial

The design of the Stove has hern prepared with great care, and cannot fail to please.
I get these Strves direct fr m die Manufacturers, and atneelling them at a small profit. I include thirty pieets of fur

Mr. George Dugdale— Pear Sir: Having been induced to try some Ferterflzcrs, and being entirely ignorant of width 1
were the best, I concluded to use three kinds: so I got ono ton of Peruvian Guano, one ton of Swan Island Guano, andl
one ton of Baugh’s Raw Bono Phosphate. I gave them all a fair trial on cotton, some of the land upon which they wer*
used having been in cultivation nearly thirty years. I put them side by side, and am satisfied that Baugh’s Raw Bon*
; Phosphate was the best.
On land that would not have made 300 lbs. per acre, I gatherd 700 ibs, cotton; therefore I feel no hesitancy in res
otnending the Phospnate as the cheapest and best we can get’
Very Ilsspectfuil. ELDER ALLISON DEKLE.
I have noticed more favorable reports from this than any other Guano for several years past, and actualy bcleivo it to
be the best and cheapest Fertiizer in use. Come, one aud all, and put in your orders tarly. Sell your cotton at 26 t*
30 cents, and make a large crop this year, and imjrove your ltLds at the same time.
