Chirstmas Presents. — Os course
the young men will want to give
Christmas presents to their sweet
hearts, and of course their sweet
hearts will expect something of the
kind. We noticed last week that Mr.
Stevens was at work on something ex
actly suited for this purpose in tho
shape of a beautiful handkerchief ring,
made of the finest gold and in tho lat
est style, workmanship of which is
superb. Mr. Stevens will make any
design you may fancy. Oh the happy
dreams and kindly throug'uts that
would no doubt follow one of these
beautiful presents.

<JHKI<<TAI AS.
All peoples among the civilized na
tions of the earth have their days of
hulliday and merriment, when the
cares of life are left behind and the
human family seek rest and pleasure
of mind and body. An enumeration
of the modes of pastime by the in
habitants of different portions of the
earth would furnish food for thought
for many hollidays; and while we
might envy the custom of somo we I
should thank God that we do not wit
ness the barbarism, enacted under the
garb of enjoyment that is prevalent
iu other portions of the world at cer \
tain periods of tho year. Everywhere, '
tradition or custom, religious, social
or national observance calls at stated |
periods to all God’s creatures, when i
men of every vocation lay aside their
industrial implements, cease to pur
suo their vocations to enjoy a general
holliday in commemoration of some
historical event. Touching this sub- ;
ject a writer in the “Southern Maga
zine” says:
But what are all these gala-days, in
deep and holy feeling, in precious sig
nificance, compared with that univer
sal one which commemorates the birth
of Christ on earth '! Near two thous
and years ago a single star moved
through the heavens, shone on its
awe-stiuck followers, and shod its ra
diant beams upon the lowly spot whore
Jesus lay. That faithful star re
mains. It ever will remain. Down
on the careless, jostling crowds of
cities, over the silent forest and
the plain, silvering the ripples of t!ie
murmuring stream and cresting the
waves of the troubled s*'a, through
the great arches of the solemn church,
upon the palace and the cot, its steady
light is shining still; and every year
peasant and prince, sage and serf,
matron and maid, pause in their al
lotted path through life and think of
Bethlehem. Then charity filieth ail
hearts and peace reigns supreme. At
a time when He, the Divine and Om
nipotent, and the inestimably loving
and gracious, gave his dearest gift—
his well-beloved Son—men give good
gifts to their fellows, and utter hearty
wishes for happiness and long life.
An oh! what a magic, fairy net j
work is entwined about this hallowod
Christmas ! What golden visions,
w hat bounding hopes, what bright
imaginings accompany its ushering in j
and attend upon its happy coming ! j
The light dies out on tho hearth, and j
the sum kings pendant there in tin fit- j
fiul firelight se;*m asinsatiate speptres
gaping for “More! more 1” Strained
eyelids gently close, eager watching
and longing is lulled and soothed in
slumber, young hearts are somewhat
at rest, and the good genius, St. Nich
olas, who pauses to linger about the
I bedside of the dying year, to smooth
! tho white locks and hear tho failing
monarch’s last faint accents, catches
the whisper, “Make my dear children
happy,” and conies to hover oer the
trundle-bed. He has ridden on tho
fast falling snow-llakes ; his coursers
have pranced down the slanting beams
of the moon, and his chariot is resting
in the overhanging branches of tho
sheltering oak. What treasures ho
bears! and how jauntily he bears
them ! Jewels and toys, fruits and
games, and everything that can make
tho innocent childish heart leap for
joy. no yoors over at tliv blankets,
lumped up by chubby forms us if a
dozen apple s were hidden there j shakos
b.s head and his sand-bag as if he
would Lo very terrible if an eye should
open—and gazes then thoughtfully at
the groat bed where there are not
red cheeks, but tho faces of paronts, a
little pale and wan and iurrowed !
Spirits are fluttering about those aged I
sleepers also. The mother smiles as ■
she dreams of ona who wont fortli in
life’s broad way, was borne on tho
stormy waves of tho tossing sea,
and weut down in the terrible waters
of tho great deep. Or of the noble
boy who sank to rest on the field of
strife, with his trusty sword in his
hand and his life-blood welling from
his manly heart. Smiling, whon her
loved one’s bones are bleaching ou the
coral reef ? Smiling, whon the cold,
cold earth is hiding a ghastly rent iu
that youthful breast ? Smiling, when
tho sweet, cherished lily is sleeping
’ncath the bending willow ? Ah ! the
spirits come from above : Christ’s hand
parted the sounding waters and called
forth the dead ; Christ’s hand bound
up tho cruol wound and burst tho cer
ements of tho tomb; Christ’s hand
watered the drooping flower with His
spirit aud took the' bruised petals to
His bosom. Tlirieo blosscd be our
Christmas, which brings such promise
to world-weary’ souls aud grief-bur
dened hearts ! But behold ! two price
less pearls are coursing down the rud
dy cheeks of Sautu-Olaus; they full
on the hearth-stone like drops of mer
cy from God Himself ho puffs
forth clouds of smoke from liis pipe
as if ashamed ot his weakness, and
presto, chango ! he goes off in the
misty wreaths his cherry lips have
formed. A rushing sound is heard,
music flutters ’mongst tho clouds, a
long track of brilliant light glides up
waid—into Heaven, we think ; the
stars fade out ono by one, like drowsy
sentinels sinking into sleop—and the
day of Christmas has dawned !
In happy homes are' sounds of fun
and frolic, and [Housing sights and de
lightful smol sos savory meats and
tempting viands greot tho grateful
senses on every side. In tho crowded
room, where the ivy is wreathed upon
the wall, music sounds and laughing
couples take their [daces for tho dance.
Those girls aro fair and lovely ; with
what glace they giide through tho
measures or whirl in the rapid figures
of the fairy waltz; their white arms
and shoulders flush in wondrous beau
ty, aud their every movement •is a
charm. Their eyes glow with anew
light too—the light of love ; low whis
pers have breathed anew year and a
new life into their guileless hearts,
and a bold but cherished guest
has entered the inner temple of their
secret souls Lot them bo happy
while human hoarts aro warm and lov
ing, and human arms are strong aud
true ; though earn return of this sea
son of festivity, like the out-running
tide which swiftly hears the white
sails farther and farther out upon
the broad ocean, are hut hastening
steps toward the shadows of old ago,
bowed forms, faded beauty, and the
twilight of the peaceful grave, whore
no voice or caress of love can awake
them to joy or mirth again.
Alas! alas ! Some aro dying in
squalor ; some little babes nre starving
iu wretched dr ns, yet with strength
left to lay hold of the robe of the Sa
viour and climb into heaven ; somo
mothers are crushing back the break
ing heart; some crawling beggars
are perishing for a morsel of the plen
ty heaped on yondor groaning board.
God help the poor on such a day as
this! Slay His mercies roach them,
and may tho rich of their abundance
give unto them. And in the words of
crippled Tiny Tim: “God bless us,
every one.” J. H. M.
