J. A. MOORE.
Tor Tax Collector.
The friends of A. J. Harp, announce tis
name as a Candidate for the odice of Tax
Collector of Terrell County, at the election
in January netts.
And they feel confident that the people
have sufficient generosity and sympathy for
one who is left with but one arm to struggle
through life, and is fully competent—to in
sure his election.
Dawson, Marcn 22d, 1867—tda
Spring Goods arriving by every train,
and our friend J. A. Moore is opening
a beautiful slock in Loyless Block.—
The ladies will find many “lovely”
articles of dress at his storo.
To Mbrciiints.—We call the after,
tion of dealers the advertisement of J.
B. Ross & Son. This is doubtless the
most extensive house in the State, and
already enj >jrs an enviable reputation
throughout the State. Small dealers
can save both money and trouble by
having their hills filled by this house.
Spring ! Spring ! —Mr. Orr, of Orr,
Brown & Cos., has just returned from
New York, where he selected one of
the most handsome Stocks ever ( ffered
ia Dawson. Their R ess Goods are de
cidedly charming, and ihc ladies should
not fail to call and examine them.
Hesters & Colley. —The advertisc
tisement of this very clever firm will in
dicate tho dimensions of their spring
stock, as well as the liberality that may
be expected from them by purchasers.
It is not strange that as enterprising a
firm as this meets success. Buyers can
rest assured tl.a f they do a sufficiently
large business to be satisfied with small
pre-fi’s.
New Paper.— We have received the
first number of the “Weekly Romanc
itff,” a literary w->»blv. just started by
Frank Leslie, of New York. It is de
voted exclusively to choice interesting
and exciting roman-e, and to the lovers
of this class of reading, will doubtless
provo a most popular publication. The
number before us is bands' tnely gotten
up-—containing eight large pages of in
teresi'm mat’er. §3 per annum. Ad
d-ess L slie Brothers, New York City.
The great family favorite, Frank
Leslie’s Chimney Corner, continues its
weekly visits, and if possible increases
in interest and usefulness to the family
circle.
Itoliuons Notice.
The 2nd Quarterly meeting, for Daw-
Ron Circuit, will bo held at Pleasant
GroVe, on the Ist Saturday and Sunday
in April
The Local preachers, Stewards and
Leaders are earnestly requested to be in
attendance. Come Brethren, arrange

Destructive Fire at Albany.
The Albany News, Extra, of the 14th,
contains tho following account of
a fire which occurred in that city on
tho previous evening, and the full loss by
which it estimates at two hundred
thousand dollars:
Last evening, botwetn half past sev
en or eight o’clock, a fire broke out in
in the back room of the dry good store
of Rano fc Hcwett, on Washington
street, supposed to have originated from
a kerosene lamp, and in spile of the al
most superhuman exertions of our fire
men, citizens and freedmen, tho fire
soon consumed the store of liane k Hew
ett, and spread rapidly up Washington
street to Broad, and then up the north
side of Broad, consuming all the wood
en buildings on that side of the stroct as
#’ar as Hines k Hobbs’ law office and
•directly opposite the -ffice of the News-,
where, about eleven o'clock, it was ar
rested. The following is the list of
sufferers:
Jiaine &, Ilewett, dry goods and cloth
ing ; Jas. H. Hill, dwelling house:
barber shop, colored man ; Griuies shoe
eh -p ; Walker’s bar ro >m ; J. F. Mer
rill’s shoo shop • L. E. & LL E. Welch
drugstore ; Veal's harness shop ; L. E.
Welch & Cos., book and jewelry store ;
<l. Neundorffer, cons. ctionery ; Albert
& Bork, dry goods and clothing ; Bush,
Groceries ; S. Strauss, jewelry store,
with dwelling ; Cordell & Cos., confec
tionery, with dwelling; T. 11. Clark*
bar room ; Drs, Cromwell k Coonelly ;
M Fleishman & Cos., dry goods; R.ch
& Cos , dry goods ; Gardner & Kirk man,
drygoods; Ivey’s Hotel; Kidd’s bar
room ; Richardson, Talbot & Cos , grree
ries; Murphy & Lindsay, dry goods
und groceries ; post office.
Ihe greater portion of the materia!
of the News office, which was ODly fav-
od by tho greatest exertions, being re-'
moved, and consequently very much dis
arranged, we are o -mpelled to postpone
our regular issue until Saturday.
It #ill bo seen the fire oeeurrol in
the very heart of the city
Horrible IWnrrier in Florida.
This community has been shock'd by
the stirtling iiitelligento that was re
ceived here a few days age, of a rmst
diabolical murder that was committed
on Mrs. Bushing, wife of Rev. R R
Rushing, citiz >ns at one time, for a se
ries of years, of this city. Mrs Rush
ing was a lady held in the highest es
teem for her character aDd social virtues
in every community in which she ha
lived, and up to the hour of sud icn and
awful death, was a useful aDd exemplary
member nf society, and of tho methodiet
Episcopal Churcl.
This sad event occurred at Waldo,
on the Florida Railroad, on the 28'h
ult , while sleeping bv the Bide of In r
husband. From Mr. Rushing wo have
the following statement as to tho fact
in the case, upon which it is supposed
to be founded. A colored woman, who
had formerly been a slave, and was rear
ed by them, bad married a colored man
known as Jordan Gretn. Tho woman
devotedly attached to her former mas
ter and mistress, was persistent in her
refusal to leave them who bad reared
her as one of their f mily, th- ms< Ives
being childless, wheu the man Green,
assuming that her refusing to leave
them rnd follow him was attributable to
the influence of Mr?. Rushing, sought
an opportunity of wreaking his diaboli
cal vengeance upon her, by first steal
ing from the house, und r the protect
ive security of night, a gun belt nging
to Mr. Rushing, and through a window
adjacent to the bed on which she at and
h r husband were reposing, in the dark
ness of the night fired upon and
almost_ instantly killed his victim he
being in the employ of Mr. Rushing,
and familiar with his hou o and habits.
The thrilling tragedy Las spread with
electric shock throughout the commu
nities where the deceased was known,
and a large number of the people of
East Florida have, and others will re
ceive the sad intelligence with hearts
overflowing with sympathy for her aw
ful fate, and for her bereft and beart
stficken companion, and relatives.
Thiough a note received from Mr.
Rushing, we learn that the man Green is
thirty yearb old, black complexion, nose
sharp and inclined downward, right ear
cropt off, an ‘S.’ supposed* to be
between his shoulders.” We trust the
officers of the law everywhere will be
vigilant to bring this fiend to tho adj 1-
d'e tion of the tribunals of justice
Florida Union, 9 th.
It seems that the provincial Confed
eration Bill lias passed tho House o r
Lords. If is stated that the new Con
federacy will be called the Kingdom of
Canada, and that Albert the Duke of
Edinburgh will he Victory. What are
the advocates of the Monroe and ctritie
about ?
At a masked ball in Vienna, a young
married lady, instigated by the demon
of jealousy, flashed a viol of vitriol in‘o
the face of her husband who was walking
with another lady. The face and neck
of die husband were horribly burned,
and one eye wns completely destroyed.
The wife also spilled so much of the
liquid upon her own arm and hand that
amputation became necessary.
TnE Flood at Chattanooga
From adiipatcb, dated at Obickamauga,
and received yesterday at tbe office of
J. B Peck) Esq., Mas'er of Transpor
tation, we are informed that the repairs
over tho Western & Atlantic Railroad,
are being pushed rapidly forward, and
that the construction train will perhaps
run into Chattanooga this evening, or
to-morrow. The main difficulty in the
way of repairs is in the vicinity of
Chickamauga, and between that point
and Chattanooga. The waters were
rapidly receding, and the full extent, of
tbe injuries would be gpeedily ascertain
ed. The water in the Tennessee river
bad so fallen aB to be within its tanks,
and hence the city of Chattanooga, or
such of it is as remains, is again visible.
We are still unable to furnish a detail
ed statement cf the great and luge. That
it has been of unprecedented magnitude
and that the loss to both life and prop
erty has been great, the latter perhaps
incalculable, there can be no question.
