AGRK PLTURAL.
Cultivate the Soil.
The Richmond Enquirer and F.sam
iodk is urging the young inen of the
South to cultivate the soil It exposes
the ssd condition of many youth* who
■ought employment as clerks in ct i>>-,
and contrasts their forlorn condition—
when out of employment, as
gre—with the betier estate these who
manfully grasped the plow-handle aod
wrung a generous support from tillage.
The following extracts are just as appli
cable to Georgia as to Virginia, aod,
though they may not prove palatable to
some, they are words of wisdom and
truth. Let any stout young fellow,
who is at a loss for something to do, give
heed to have good alvice. The Exami
ner says :
“Many a aoldier who surrendered
with G-neral Lee at Appomattox Court
House, in April, 1805, with the aid of
a broken down cavalry horse or a galled
and broken-winded mule, managed to
make a good orop of corn.
“And wo cannot recall a single in
stance of a young man of industry and
energy, who engaged in agricultural
pursuits after the war, who has not done
better than had he gone behind a counter
to moasure calico and tape, or enrolled
himself in those unhappy armies of
martyrs, who announce to a heedlec*
public their willingness to ptacti e law
and medicine.
“Wc sincerely hope that during the
next two months every young man who
does not see his way clearly to a sup
port in commerce or the professions,
will try bis hand at farming. Half of
the best land is lying idle for want of
hands to till it, and however unpropi
tious the seasons may prove, the culti
vation of corn, wheat, oats, etc., is sure
to yield a support to the industrious la
borer. We do not mean that an incur
ably lazy white man whose ‘farming’
consists in hiring a worthless negro or
two, whom he overlooks by sitting on
a stump with an umbrella over his head
is likely to succeed. God forb and that
nuch a cumberer of the earth should
demoralize the youth of tbs South by
succeeding at anything —for his exam
ple would be a bad one.
“But, looking to the cheapness of
lands, and their lertiiity, and the great
ease with which they are cultivated, and
to their accessibility to the very best
markets for grain, the industrious far
mer is sure to do better fer the pretent
than the struggling merchant or the un
employed professional men. There can
be no real prosperity as long as
agricultcral languishes.
From the So. Cultivator.
MOLKS.
In the language of a schoolboy,
writing his first composi iod, we would
say:
“The mole is a mischievous little an
imal that lives in the ground. He
has a loDg, white, tender looking nose,
and a pair of hands entirely too large
to give him a place in genteel compa
ny. He especially deligh s to live in
gardens, and in rich lots where sweet
potatoes are cultivated A few unso
cial follows may be found iu isolated
places in cornfields and cotton patches
but if the soil is not good they are Dot
abundant iD such places. I hough he
has no eyes, he can distinguish a yam
potatoe lrom the poke root, and when
other provision iu scarce he has no ob
jection to taking a bait of the multiply
ing or other sorts of onions. Whether
be relishes the flavor or not »e can’t
tell; he may eat them as we do pick
led pork and com bread, from necessi
ty, not choice.
“A Practical entomologist may
know more about seine thing* than
practical farmers do, but if he suppos
es that our rebel moles livson worms
he is grievously mistaken. They may
devour them by way of changing diet,
but other food suite them batter; po
tatoes in summer, scallions in winter,
sprouted corn, bits of bread or pills of
corn dough, at any time. In digging
sweet potatoes, a few years ago, the
the fork hoe was thrust through a
mole the first dig. He was in the act
of feeding on the po'a'oe ■ s was pr >v
ed by the freshly gnawed root and
careful and minute examination of the
contents of the full stomach ; which
contained no vestige of anything hut
pptato, not so finely comminuted as to
cause any difficulty in recognizing it
at once. Over and eften have ihe
young vines been suddenly to wilt in
a short time after they were trane
planted, and on examination were
found eaten ofl over the path of the
mote. So with young corn and other
plants.
The character given by “Pracfietl
Entomologist’’ may suit loyal moles,
but the rebel sort lining here, do hartr,
and we believe, only harm. If allowed
to vote, wc would assuredly support that
vOtigi" 'flu ill wjtiu hUWCiUS i i licatlek,
< xpetiiation, colou:* ition, or extermina
tion to the whole seed, breed, and gen
eration of these pests. We have vainly
tried to work them out of the gr >und
with castor oil seed, and now propose
Dr. Brandretb’s pills or Radway’n Hog
ulator. Cow bonrs, sugar dishes, pitch
era, spike traps may catch an uuwary
one occasionally, but so far ns wc can
observe, the lose of one or two only
cause* the others to work more assidu
ously in tunneling seed-bed- and rows
