NOTORIOUS NEGRO.
Sanders villo Ilorald.
As« Lawson, the negro who for
two <]■ carles has been a fugitive from
j'is'iee, hihI by hi* daring and ffa-
j-rant crimes, hag been looked upon
■* an outlaw, died on Tue-day, the
II1 inst 4 from the shot received on
i ie day of the riot at Oconee.—
Am »ng hi*, first acts which are now
r memb -red, as a public offender,
w is perpetrated at. TVtmille. Whi e
in the baggage c >r during the war,
he adroitly managed to shove a
trunk, probably fi led with supplies
for some soldier, *ut -*f the car at
tihis station, and leaping out sought
to escape. H ■ win, liowever, ciught
in the act, the train was signaled to
s op, pursuit was at once instituted,
and the rogue wai captured. Asa
rlnubfoss resisted his pursuers, as he
was so seriously stabbed and cut that
hi* life for a long time was dinpaired
• f. The next time Asa comes to the
front, a* a lawless miscreant, whr du
ring the ever memorable march of
Gen. Sherman through the country.
Hero he acted a tivachcr >U* inform
ant against the whites, directing the
marauding parties in their scouts for
pii age, robbery and vandalism. He
is charged with leading the party to
the house of Mr. Gideon Strange, a
quiet and inoffensive citizen of our
county, and himself shot Mr. Strange,
aided in robbing his house, and then
{applied the torch and gave it to the
flames. Mr. Strange yet lives, lamed
bv the loss of one arm by the shot of
Asa Lawson. Other families were
visited by the ruthless soldiery un
der the lead of this graceless viIlian,
which knowing his lawless character
were thrown into the greatest con-
s-ernatior, and in some instances
robbed of s'oek, and the scanty pro
visions necessary for their subsist
ence. Following the army of Sher
man, Asa faded from sight until
1877, official information was re*
ueived hero that he was in custody
jo St. Louis. Dr. J. B. Roberts, of
■this place, was employed to tiring
him here, which, as many of our
readers wi’l remember, was done, and
Asa Lawson was lodged in jail. In
«lue time he was tried for arson, con
victed and sentenced by Judge John-
non to ten years imprisonment in the
penitentiary. A-a, however, cut out
of jail, made his escape, and eluded
arrest until his audacity led him to
'Vika part in the sanguinary riot
which occurred in this county, at
Oconee on Christmas day. He evi
dently was in the conspiracy on
that day, had armed himself with a
large navy pist"l, and was seen
^talking about before the riot began,
and when it was fairly op mod rush-
,ed forward, and emptied two barrels
of this murderous weapon at the
party, which fortunately for the
"lives ot those he sought, missed their
im. He was passing under the
none of George Galloway, and
laitned to be from Dublin, be also
aid that he had been employed as
>ok on the C< b'ville, the boat that
'plies between Dublin and Oconee.—
He has been seen at Tennille also
during the year, and his darinv
c haracter is evident from his being
»t Oconee, where he once livwd a
► lave. As previously published,
when an attempt was made to am st
him during the riot, he made bis
w ay off, but. was wounded so seriously
h ball passing through his body, that
he was caotured, and ny the anxiety
of bis mother for him, hi* identity
v us discovered. After lingering
: bout eight days lie died, and the
i inlaw who has long defrauded Jus
tice out of its victim, has bv the
hand* of a -low but a terrible retri-
bu'ion paid the penalty of his awful
