1 *iif Ms. liy X. llrum Clark, New York:
.1. I.illle A Co., 1SKI.
Such is the title of a mode
nme that we have been roqui
notice. In ft note to the
of this papm’, the role or mission of
the publication is thus brietly an
nunciated by the wife of the author,
under whose auspices the book has
been compiled and published: “It
is merely a little memorial volume,
and 1 have had printed a limited
number, because I did not wish to
dispose of them for any personal ad
vantage.” We have taken the lib
erty of quot ing this much, as an act
of justice to the book itself, and for
Hie additional reason that we pro
pose' to inspect it only in that light,
in which it is presented by the sim
ple preface.
Apart from its literary merits,
this book possesses a local interest
that cannot fail to render it attract
ive, and that will readily command
for it thi‘ “limited” sale that is de
sired. N. Drum Clark, prior to his
death, was a resident of Angus,
ta, being also well-acquainted with
many of the citizens of this com
munity. In the volume of poems he
has left behind, occur many testi
monials of the esteem in which he
held his Augusta friends, and those
who enjoyed his intimacy here.—
The A tajufta liar is a, bouquet, in
which beautiful garlands are twin
ed, each tlu' representative of a pe
culiar variety, and each adding a
beauty of its own to the cluster.—
Judge James H. Hook, Judge Wm.
Gibson, A. C. Holt, Joseph Ganahl,
Charles A. Harper, II. Clay Foster,
Joseph B.Gumming,Geo. T. Barnes,
and the names of other members of
that unique association—“The Au
gusta Bar”—arc themes upon which
Clark’s poetic facility lingered long
and lovingly, and at times eloquent
ly. We find also a tender poem,
entitled Home, and inscribed to Jus,
F. Frost, formerly of this place;
another, an Obituary, preluded by
this notice: “Died, in Waynesboro,
(la,, Wednesday evening, June 1(1,
1 sso, after an illness of two days,
Martha Agnes, twin daughter of
James E. and Mary F. Frost, aged
four years and fourteen days.”—
Those, and other simulur efforts, in
scribed to friends in Augusta, and
elsewlibre in this immediate section,
will render for the book a local
popularity, that will evince itself in
the ready sale that it will command.
It is not necessary to notice par
ticularly the literary merits of this
production, or to scrutinize deeply
its claims to universal recognition.
The modest preface quoted above,
in which is shadowed its sphere,
forbids this. It is, however, just
and sutllcient to say, that a perusal
of the interesting little volume “in
blue,” reveals numerous poetic
gems, which scintillate with the pe
culiar sparkle of genius. Indeed,
in many of his songs, N. Brum
Clark has given evidence of no or
dinary talent, while some of his
“expressions” hear tin' marks of
genuine inspiration. In proof of
this, we here quote briefly from the
pages open before us.
in the poem, “Thing* that are
Eternal never (trow Old," occur
these two verses,
“Thebes no longin' exists but In story,
The splendor of Athens went down like the
sitn, x
Ami the ehleflulns Mint mitrslmlled their le
gions to glory,
Have mouldered to dust like the trophies
they won.
Fumed are the exploits of Ajax and Aeiilllos,
Hector and Helen the poets employ,
(Irccu were their laurels! they’re faded like
memories
And the last gleam of sunlight that shone
upon Troy.
"Corinth: the bright waves of Ionian,
Image the stars that looked down on thy
fall.
And the Isthmus once trod by the saint from
Jcomum,
Hloouis with the roses that grew on thy
wall!
High up the steeps of the Aeroeorintlds
The priestess no longer presides at her
shrine;
Her voice, like the tones of the musical t'yn-
t litis;
lias ceased to embolden to conflicts sub-
11 me!’’
Again, in E.rtraet*Jrom Vatphur-
ilia, we quote the following, in which
Ctcsnr, the powerful Imporntor, is
represented as taking bis last “fare
well” of Calphurnia, his devoted
wife, just prior to his departure to
convene the Senate, on the mentor
able “ides of March.”
“Nay, nay, I'alphttrnla, It wtis but a dream,
A nd dreams thy .1 alius foal's not, nor should
thou.
Rise, I’rldo of Koine! This day as t'lesar’s
queen,
The crown shall sparkle on thy brow.
“The summer of my life Is ending.
Like a love' i earliest dreiUli,—
Like the rainbow glories blending
O’er Savannah’s yellow stream.
Every bill Is crowned with roues,
Every valley dressed In green:
Every sunny beam discloses
Nature in her loveliest sheen.
Mine to own in retrospect Ion -
Memory’s Jewel rich and rare—
Not a dream, but recollection.
Pure as sunlit ocean all'.
We might reproduce more, but
lh(> limited space of the newspaper
column warns us to be brief. In
conclusion, it is to be observed that
this book will amply lill the sphere
for which it is intended. As a me-

Tin* Fence Law Nets another Hup*
Sakatoua Springs, New York,)
August-1,18Sil. s
Editor True Citizen: 1 have
no desire to appear in print, but I
wish to enter my protest, as a
citizen and a freeholder of Burke
county, against the passage of the
stock law Hill now before the Leg-
Mature. Though I am quite a d~
tauce from home, still 1 try to keep
informed on matters transpiring
there, and the fact of my absence
does not lessen the interest I have
in both the present and future pros
perity of the county. The Jlepre-
sontative who is advocating “no
fence,” doubtless thinks jt is to his
interest, and he may also think It
will benefit a good many others,
and if 1 were t > consult my in.
dividual interest, exclusively, and
if the inevitable elfect of the law
did not operate to greatly lessen
our labor, 1 might favor it also. I
hold that the first duty of a Bepre-
senta'tive is to inform himself of the
wishes and needs of the people, and
consider well the effect before he
introduces any local bill, especially
one upon which is so great a diversi
ty of opinion as there is upon this
fence law question—-and one which
could and would so materially
effect the present interests and
probable future prosperity and
advancement of the county.
The question of “no fence” is a
very delicate one, and.should not he
pressed thoughtlessly, carelessly,
or stubbornly. A few years may
serve to ripen the public mind for
the passage of such a law, but, now,
let us like sensible, reasonable peo
ple bide our time, and as I said pri
vately, before I left home, for the
present “let well enough alone.”
I am pained to bear that the rains
have not only been very partial,
bill .scarcely anywhere enough.—
As the drouth will cut olf and ren
der the corn crop short, the wise
farmer will supplement, with an
ample crop of fall oats, and let their
watch-word bo “economy and cur
tailment of expenses.”
Waynesboro is represented more
than usual at Saratoga this season,
and the most of us are stopping at
the same hotel, which is centrally
located, and where we see all that
is to lie seen, and we have quite an
enjoyable time. We have had com
sidorable rain, and frequently it re
quires overcoats to make us feel
comfortable. I go individually to
New York about the titli inst., where
I shall devote my timoto buying
got ids to the tiesi advantage, so that
1 may meet smiling faces when 1
return home.
Excuse me for tresspassing so
long upon yourtinje.
