Tile Artesian Well.
AVork on our artesian well,
around whose precincts such pro
found silence has reigned for seve
ral weeks, will begin again in a
week or two, when competent
workmen will he placed in charge,
iuid it will he pressed to completion.
The well is now over 400 feet deep,
and it is thought by some that AO or
7"> feet more will open the deep
fountains. AVe might have des
paired of ever seeing the fountain
flow, as some of our citizens have
already done, had we not known
the energy and indomitable will of

a visit to relatives and friends last
week. Freddie is quite a stranger
in our midst now, and we are
always glad to welcome him among

It is rumored that Air. J. A.
Carswell contemplates moving to
Waynesboro in the near future,
AH. C. is one of our most public
spirited and enterprising citizens,
and his removal would he deeply
felt.
Our school is flourishing under
the supervision of Prof. J. AV. El
lington, there Is a larger number of
pupils in nttendonce than for the
past five years. Prof. Ellington
comes to us reccommended by some
of the first men of the State.

since May, and, strange to say, the
corn crop is good. Cotton, peas and
potatoes are almost n failure. AVe

A letter from Air. J. A. Watkins
to AIj\ I). B. AVells, our town mar
shal, says that he in company with
another gentleman, got on track of
Joe Tyson, the negro who escaped
from jail last week, and after fol
lowing him nearly all night, capt
ured him at the house of an old ne
gro woman, in Emouol county,—

about breakfast time the next morn
ing, and after securely chaining
Joe in the gear, house of a AH. Wig
gins, went in to breakfast. Joe
was left alone about U> minutes, and
when the party returned it was dis
covered that some one (who it is
suspieioned was a negro man on the
place) had broken a link of the
chain, and Joe was gone. Air. AV.
says Joe wore off a pair of handcuffs,
the half of a trace chain and a pad
lock. But Joe is gone again, and
will doubtless be hard to capture a
second time.

It is with deep regret and a sad
heart that wo chronicle the death
of Dr. J. D. Perkins, which occurred
on Alontluy last, after a lingering
illness, at the residence of his
brother, Dr. E. A, Perkins. Dr. Per
kins was a promising young man,
and notwithstanding his continued
ill health had achieved a splendid
reputation as a physician. As a
friend, ho was true thoughtful and
obliging; a polished gentleman, a
noble citizen, a generous neighbor
|—the poor never cried to him in
| atllictlon in vain. His loss will bo
long felt by this community, and
Ids many friends attested their love
for him during his last illness by
1 their devotion at Ids bedside, and
tlie large attendance at his burial.
The bereaved family have the
heart-felt sympathy of tlm whole
community.

casion, the bridal presents were

thirty one congratulatory tele
grams received from relatives of
the young married people from all
over the country—one being from
Europe. The banquet was superb,
and all the large congregation
present enjoyed themselves to tlie
fullest extent. AVe bog to tender
our congratulations and good wishes
to the young people for their future
happiness.
—Our correspondent from Perkins
Junction, sends us the sad intelli
gence of the death of Dr. J. D. Per
kins, who fell a victim to the fell
destroyer, consumption, at the resi
dence of his brother Dr. E. A. Per
kins, near Perkins Junction, on last
Aionday morning. A noble and a
useful young man has been cut
down in ids young manhood. Death
indeed aimed his fatal shaft at a shin
ing mark and many besides his rela
tives mourn his loss.
