attempted to pass under the etu
while the train was standing nt the
station, taking in wood and water,
w hen the ears moved hack on him,
crushing his heel and hinder part
fils left foot in a most terrible |
manner. The hoy was placed on j
the ears and sent to this place, and ,
put under the cure ol Dr. A. G.
Whitehead. The doctor struggled i
to save the bov’s foot, but it was so i
badlv crushed that was inipos-,
sible, and mortification intervening,:
amputation became necessary to
save Ids life, and on Wednesday
evening we accompanied Drs.
Whithoheud, Oliver, Duncan and
.Johnson to see the operation per
formed. As many of our renders,
doubtless, do not know anything of
such an operation, we propose to
give a detailed account of it for
their benefit. Entering the house,
the doctors carefully examined the
state of the patient, and then gave
him a glass of whisky. Divesting
themselves of their coats, tho doc
tors began work in earnest; mov
ing the patient into I'm right posi
tion, Dr. Johnson seated himself
by the bedside and applied a
spungc charged with chloroform to
i the boy’s nose, while Dr. Whitehead
; placed tho keen, glittering in-
j strumonts in handy position. The
I hoy soon sank into unconsciousness,
i when, having docided upon the
place of the cut, Dr. W hitehead
grasped a large knife and with one
: deft motion ran its keen edge
entirely around the leg, cutting
det']) into the muscle, then with a
small knife the skin was cut back,
and an incision made between the
hones with a long doubledged knife,
and Dr. Oliver quickly inserted a
strip of cloth and pressed the flesh
hack from the hone, when with a
few rapid strokes with tho saw the
hones were severed, and the foot
fell from the leg. Next came the
tying up the arteries, which was
neatly and quickly done by Dr.
Duncan, Then came the closing of
the flesh over the stump, the stitch
ing and bandaging, and the opera-
11ion was over, occupying as short a
j space of time as possible. All our
j physicians were present, and the
operation was most skilfully per
formed. Tho patient is doing well.
' And right hero we must ask our
surgeons not to laugh at us too
much, as we have not attempted to
use the terms of science, but have
merely told the occurrence as it ap
peared to us.

have selected all my goods in person, while
recently in New York and bought only from

bought too heavy. Come and price my
goods before purchasing elsewhere.
