therefore, beg those whose eye

Serious AccliUnt.
Last Saturday evening a couple
of young sportsmen, of the colored
way of shooting, went on a bird
hunt. They Hushed a covey of
birds, and one of them fired, the
whole load touching the point of the
shoulder, glanced into the neck of
ids companion boring a hole into
whicli the doctor inserted two of
His fingers to their utmost extent
without touching a shot. Strange
to say the fejlow is not dead, but our
last accounts say he is improving.
Take Notice.
About or just before day on Wed
nesday morning, a negro rolled a
bale of cotton from off the platform
at tho depot, where it had been
placed for shipment, across the rail
road to Mackenzie A Neely’s store,
hung it on the scales with the
marked side down, and awaited for
tho store to be opened. As soon as
the store was opened be sold the
cotton to the above named firm, and
pocketing the money, and pretend
ing that his wagon was leaving him
hurried away. When the cotton
was taken from the scales and turn
ed over the marks disclosed the
fact that they had bought cotton
which had been taken from the
railroad platform, and which be
longed to some one else. Verily,
this darky lias reduced stealing to
a science.

murder of his wife, and convicted
at the last term of the court, will

The grounds upon which he makes
the move are unknown to me.
The dry weather lias actually
become alarming. It is thought
that the fall term of the Superior
Court of Emanuel county which
will eovenc next Monday will have
to be adjourned for the lack of
water.
Miss M. II. Prescott, who lias

has made many friends here, and
her departure is sincerely regret-
ed. Several young men are dis
consolate.

We learn that Mr. J. P. Brinson
lias had the good luck to recover
his mule, which was stolen a few
weeks ago and his barn burned.
The thief was one Robert Johnson,
colored, who lived at Perkins’ Junc
tion during the early part of this
year, and who, being under arrest
for larceny, runaway and left his
bondsmen to pay the forfeited bond.
There is a report here that John
son was killed by the sheriff of
Scriven county, on the South Caro
lina bank of the Savannah river,
while resisting arrest and attempt
ing to shoot the officer, but the
report lacks confirmation.
We learn that Col. John 1). Ash
ton has formed a partnership with
Col. R. R. Norman, and opened a
law office in Swainsboro. We arc
not advised if Col. Ashton will re
move to that place, hut think it
likely lie will. Col. Norman was
lately in partnership with Col.
Kelly, which partnership was dis
solved by the sudden deatii of the
latter. We have already spoken in
the most flattering terms of Col. N.,
and deem it unnecessary to eulogize
Col. Ashton—his ability as a lawyer
is too well known and recognized
by the public to require it. The
new firm certainly has a brilliant
future before it. Col. A. does not
think that the opening of an office
in Swainsboro will materially in
terfere with his practice here, as he
will be near enough to come over
and give his attention in matters
requiring his presence—lie will cer
tainly be here at each term of the
Superior Court. We extend to the
new firm our best wishes for its
success.

Letter from Athens.
Messrs. Editors:—The time has
come for me to write again, as was
my promise. Athens is fast becom
ing the city of tho State. Her wa
ter works, which will cost 1100,000
dollars, will be completed by Jan
uary 1st, and by that time site will
lie lighted by electric light. The
banquet of the Hope fire company
came off last Thursday night, and
was a grand affair. It is one of the
finest companies in the State, and
always attentive to tho fires. She
lias a member that they are going
to make out run Roberts, of Augus
ta, at the next fireman’s parade.
The monthly examinations of the
students of the University are com
ing off daily, and the average col
lege boy turns sick as his time
draws near. Athens is soon to
have a new opera house, and 1
think it is time, for the present one
is a disgrace to the city of Athens,
As fine troupes come here as any
city in the South, and there should
be a respectable house for them.
