The Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNKSHOUU, <L\., N(IV K.MIIKIi II, ISSli.
elution l< iioks.
01 a hone Meets Ins Waterloo.
Elections were held on Tuesday
in ten States, the Democrats carry
ing four out*)f the ten, including
Virginia and Mississippi, which
have heretofore been Kcpublictin.
The news front Virginia is simply
glorious. Malione Inis been de
feated by at least m majority.
The dispatches say:
Richmond, Va., Nov. 7.—Addi
tional * returns this morning show
a net Democratic gain of is, which,
insures a Democratic gain in the
House of 1(1, with a good prospect
of the majority reaching 2o or .'10,
the Democrats having lilt out of 40
Senators, which will make their
majority four, with chances of in
creasing it to-night. The Demo
crats estimate their majority oft
the popular vote of the State at
‘ between 12,000 and 20,000.
Prominent Readjustees here have
given up the contest. There is no
doubt that the Democrats have
elected a majority in both branches
of the Legislature. They now claim
a majority of three in the Senate
and twenty in the J louse, which will
give them a majority of twenty-
three on joint ballot. This insures
the election of a Democratic United
State's Senator as the successor of
Malione. If the Democratic gains
continue to increase in the same
rates as those already received, the
Democratic popular majority will:
reach 18,(100.
The wildest excitement prevails
here. The scene in front of the
J)inj)a/r/i office this afternoon was
the most remarkable ever witnessed
in Richmond. The street was
blocked with an immense mass of
people,and business was almost en
tirely suspended. Speaker after
speaker was called upon, and they
responded in congratulatory and
stirring addresses, which created
unbounded enthusiasm. They went
on for hours.
Pet us give Virginia three diet rs !
for her redemption from radical I
rule. Malione will now be rele
gated to private life, when* he can ;
meditate over his political infamy, j
Ren Butler, the beast, has been
defeated in Massachusetts. We
took no stock in Ren Rntler, as we
considered the contest between
two radicals, and have never ex-1
peeted anything from his State. I
Maryland has gone Democratic
by a handsome majority, and
maintains her place in tho Demo
cratic column for 1884. Welcome,
Maryland!
New York is doubtful, and it will
require the utmost Democratic or
ganization and harmony in 188^to
carry that State for the Democrats, j
Yet there is no reason to despair.
Mississippi has gone almost solid
ly Democratic. She, too, wipes the
stain of Republican rule from her
escutcheon.
Dispatches from New Jersey say:
Trenton, Nov. 7.—Fuller returns i
from various counties are arriving!
this morning, but many of the inte
rior counties can as yet only be esti-
mated.
Abbett’s majority appears to be
steadilya incresing. The Trenton ;
Times, in a carefully prepared table.!
of actual and estimated returns,)
gives Abbott ’>,r>00 majority.
The Republicans will have three
majority in the Senate and the
Democrats seven in the House.
This will give the Democrats a ma
jority of four on joint ballot.
Jersey City, Nov. 7.—'TJie Dem
ocratic State committee claim the
election of Abbott by 700, and also
the Assembly. The Republican
committee concedes the election of
Abbott.
Tkentox, Nov. 7.—Abbett’s ma
jority is steadily increasing.
Connecticut has gone Republican.
No hope for her in 1884.
Nebraska, always Republican,
maintains her usual position.
Pennsylvania has gone Republi
can by 7,000 majority. Of course,
nothing more can be expected from
a State whose soldiers, (ieneral Mc
Clellan said, “marched off the Held
of battle to the music of the enemy’s
guns,” because their term of enli'st-
mont expired on the day of battle.
Minnesota has gone Republican
by 2o,0U0 majority.
' Taking the news from all the
elections of Tuesday, we consider
them favorable to the Democrats,
and once more urge our readers to
harmonious action and a wise
policy.
