Fair week lias come and gone,
and with it the throngs which have
crowded our streets for the past few
days, while the contrast gives our
city a deserted appearance. The
weather, barring tin* dust caused by
the extreme drouth, was all that
could lie asked. The attendance
was large, and our fair has proved
a success.
The exhibits, though not as exten
sive as we had hoped to see, were
very line. Several of our home
merchants, among whom we notice
S. A. Gray, W. A. Wilkins, Evans A
Rhodes, H. Franklin, Fulcher A Co.,
Dr, .J. A. Polhill and Dr. D. It. Ford
A Co., had splendid exhibits on the
ground. We cannot particularize
or draw invidious distinctions where
all made such flue displays. Our
merchants have laid in this season,
perhaps, the finest stocks of goods
ever brought- to Waynesboro, and
this fact was .made apparent by
these exhibits on the fair grounds.
The ladies’ department was full
of beautiful articles, the work of
our Indies. Indeed, our ladies
showed a genius and taste for tin*
beautiful rarely equaled; never ex
celled; and it was evident that
each and eviyy one of them de

The exhibition in live stock was
most excellent, there being on tin

thoroughbred cattle to be

splendid animal.:, the question oc
curred to us, “ Why will our farm
ers raise such poor stock, when, witn
a very small additional expense, the
finer breeds might be had?” and we
hope this fair will excite an ambi
tion among them to procure tin*
more valuable bloods.
The display of horses, both home-
raised and from a distance, could
not have been excelled. Some of
the most famous runners and trot
ters of the State were here, and tlu*
races proved a most interesting
feature of the fair.
(treat skill was shown by the
marksmen, the prize being carried

by Sylvanus Morris, Esq.,of Athens,
with a neat address.
The “Annual Hop” was the oc
currence of the occasion. Tlu* at
tendance was full, and beautiful la
dies and gallant men were grouped
under tlu* Hashing lights of the
chandeliers, in pleasant converse,
or gave up to the ecstatic enjoy
ment of mazy whirl of the giddy
waltz, All was beauty; all was en
joyment; and all wind literally “as
merry as a marriage bell.” The
Annual Hop of the second fair will
long be remembered by those who
participated in its enjoyment.
On Friday evening the fair closed,
after a most successful four days’
