From every quarter—city, town,
and even from the country—our
exchanges bring us news of disas
trous tires. Many a city pallatial
residence, quiet country home, and
millions of property have been turn
ed to ashes, and the owners render
ed homeless or ruined. This the
natural consequence of the intense
cold rendering hot fires necessary,
and carelessness in not attending to
fines and chimneys, and should a
lire occur in some parts of it is im
possible to calculate the damage
which would he the consequence.
Therefore, we beg and caution each
and every one of our citizens to he
careful and see to it that their
chimneys, Hues and stovepipes are
clean and safe. A little trouble
this way may save not only your
self, hut your neighbors from des
truction. Don’t neglect this caution,
as most of the fires reported when
traced to their origin comes from
these sources.
year. Let us hope 'that peace and
plenty may abound, and that the
fatal predictions that have been
spoken concerning this new year,
may prove false. The past year
will be memorable for its many
fatalities; its whole course is mark
ed with the desolating track of the
cyclone, tornado, earthquake, fire
and flood.
The election for mayor and conn-1
oilmen tak.es place on Monday [
next, the i Ith lust., and from the j
present outlook promises to afford
some excitement. For some time |
past we have heard that the munici
pal election was to he tin exciting
one, but we saw nothing and heard
little to indicate such a result. The j
last few days have, developed eon-1
siderable feeling upon the subject.
This is nil wrong, and for the peace i
and harmony of our whole commu-j
nity we sincerely hope it will not
be permitted to go any further.—j
Doth candidates for the mayorship
are cool, thorough business men, |
both are large property owners, and J
both have, or ought to have the |
interests of the city equally at
heart. What Waynesboro needs
in a chief executive officer is one |
who entertains liberal views, who
will direct the city legislation for
the public good—one who can dis
cern, and who will foster and ad
vance all its material interests.—
One who hy both precept and exam
ple will create and encourage a
spirit of public enterprise and ad
vancement. With these qualities
in a chief executive no more can be
required, and when a voter has
made up his miml upon these
points his duty is plain. There is,
therefere, no necessity for any ex
citement which can do no good.

On last Tuesday night, week ago,
at Hi o’clock p. m., the weather was
warm—too warm for the season.—
But between that time and day,
Wednesday morning, there was a
sudden and marked change, and at
sunrise Wednesday morning it was
cold. It continued to grow colder
until Saturday morning when we
had a small brush of snow. Tho
cold continued to increase, and
Sunday and Monday is said to have
been the coldest days that have oc
curred in this climate in thirteen
years. Monday set in cloudy, and
hy turns gave us snow and sleet,
and on Monday night culminated
in a terrible sleet which bound tree
and ground in ice on Tuesday morn
ing. Wednesday was very cold;
hut there it reached its lowest point
of temperature, and on Thursday
began to moderate. On Friday
there was a marked change, and
to-day, (Saturday) the weather is
mild.
The great social event of the
Christmas season, was a social par
ty given by Mrs. V. Cochran, on
Thursday evening. A large num
ber of invitations were issued and
the attendance was very large. As
the guests arrived they were re
ceived by Mrs. C. and iter charming
daughter, Miss Fannie, who made
them feel the genuiness of the wel
come at once. A band was pres
ent, and at intervals, discoursed
sweet music. The supper was a
marvel of elegance, and in each
and every particular was perfect.
Those who were present will long
remember the joyful occasion.
