Hurled Alive.
Wheeling, W. Va., Juno 24.—
One of those ghastly stories of in tor
ment before life becomes extinct,
which causes an involuntary shud
der of horror to pass through the
reader, is current in this city. The
victim, so the story goes, is a young
married lady of 2d years. In May
of last year, three months after her
marriage, the lady was taken vio
lently ill, and after lingering for
ten days, apparently died. There
were certain peculiarities about the
appearance of the supposed corpse,
however, which caused a suspicion
in the mind of the attending physi
cian that his patient might he in a
trance; but after keeping the body
for four days, with no signs of re
turning life, the remains were con
signed'to the grave, temporary in
terment being made in the family
lot, in an abandoned graveyard. A
day or two ago the body was disin-
tered prior to a removal to anoth
er cemetery. To the surprise of the
sexton, the collln lid showed signs
of displacement, and on its being
removed the grave-digger was hor
rified to find that the remains were
turned face downward, the hands
filled with long tufts of hair torn
from the head, and the "face, neck
and bosom deeply scratched and
scarred, while the lining of the cottln
had been torn into fragments in
the desperate efforts of the entoom-
ed victim to escape from her terri
ble fate. Since the discovery, the
young husband has been prostrat
ed and his life has been dispaired
of, 4 The names are withheld.

Fort Smith, Juno 24.—The case
pf Mary Matoy and her son James,
aged about twelve years, for the
killing of Arch Casey on the third
of December last, near Fort Gibson,
Indian Territory, lias terminated
by the jury bringing in a verdict of
manslaughter against both of them
Judge Porker sentenced them to
the penitentiary for a term of ten
years each and a fine of $1,000. The
charge against them was murder,
but was reduced to manslaughter
by the jury, on tlie strength of the
woman's evidence. The circum
stances in the case are curious. On
the morning of the fid of December
tlie dead body of Casey was found
in his wagon, which had the team
attached, near his place of abode,
about nine miles from Mrs. Matoy’s.
An investigation was at once be
gan and the wagon tracked back to
tlie defendant’s place. There blood
was discovered about the bed and
on the floor under the bed; also
leading from the house to where
the wagon stood in tlie yard. These
circumstances caused the arrest of
Mrs. Matoy and her son, though
they persistently denied all knowl
edge of the killing until a few days
prior to the trial, when they owned
that the killing had been done by
them in self-defense.

Ah Insurance Swindle.
Portland, Ore., June 24.—The
House of Lewis Kockley, near
Hillsboro, burned Saturday night.—
Tlie supposed remains of Kockley
were found in ther ruins. His wife
and child wore absent at her fa
ther’s house. An investigation
leads to tlie belief that it is an in
surance swindle; that an old skele
ton was placed in the house to rep
resent the charred remains of Kock
ley. His wife acknowledged to
having policies on the life of her
husband, and deeds of property.—
Before the coroner's jury, she swore
that she dreamed that a man shot
her husband, and fear compelled
her to seek shelter at her father’s
house, Kockley was a German fio
years old, from Ida Grove, Iowa,
and arrived in Oregon three
months ago. He was insured in the
New York Life for $3,000, and tlie
Mutual Temperance Union for $fi,-

The Melon Crop.
The Savannah Newt*:
Th6 crop
througliout tlie State is light, and,
so far as can he learned, is a partial
lailure, the shipments falling great
ly below those of last year. The in
dications are that the markets will
avoid anything like a glut, and no
trouble will he experienced in that
direction. Tlie acreage was smaller
at the start than last year, but it
was expected that there would he a
much larger yield. The heavy rains
and cool weather, however, damag
ed tlie crops so that it is generally
estimated that it will not exceed
two-thirds of what was expected.—
Tlie prices thus far have been satis
factory to growers, good melons
selling for $fi. r ,() to $4f>0 per ear load
in the market. With the facilities
which tlie railroads have provided
for moving tlie crop, it is predicted
that if it does not cause the average
prlco to'be maintained, melon cul
ture will lie at an end in Georgia.
