tory of the Associated Press dispatch
from Manila: “Cacbalogon, Occ. 27.—
Naval cadet Loveman Noa, while on
shore near Nipanipa, Samar, on boat
expedition, was killed by natives Oct.
87.” Naval Cadet Noa was appointed
from Tennessee and entered the Annap
olis academy in September, 1896.

Chattanooga, Oct. 28.—A. K Trigg
of the firm of Trigg, Dobbs & Co., of
this city, one of the most prominent
wholesale grocery firms of the south,
died of heart failure at 9 o’clock today.

terian synod of Georgia will held its
annual meeting in this city, commenc
ing Wednesday, Nov. 6. A full quota
of ministers aud delegates are expected.

with the Presbyterian church at 7:30
Wednesday evening and daily thereaf

al John B. Gordon and his sen, Major
Hugh Gordon, have bought an exten
sive fruit farm on- the Biscayne bay, in
Dade county. General Gordon an

Tampa Strike Is Practically a Thing
of the Past.
Tampa, Fla., Oct. 28.—The following
statement was issued last night by citi
zens relative to the strike situation here:
“The strike of cigarmakers known as
the Resistencia union is practically n
thing of the past. The strike has not
been declared off by the leaders of the
organization, but the mass of the mem
bers have done so. A census of the
cigarmakers actually at work during
the week just closed shows that there
are 1,377. In addition to these there
are about 500 persons employed iu van
ous other departments of tho faocories.
These figures are given out after a care
fui census has been takeu of those who
are at work. The factories ail have
pickers and packers, selectors and
striner-. and every department is run

Tallahassee, Oct. 29 — Notwith
standing the fact that real estate to lilt-
value of more than $250,000, covered by
unredeemed tax sale certificates, ha-
been excluded from this year’s tax book-
by Comptroller Croorn, the tax books
coming from the counties for ihe cur
rent year show a very gratifying in
crease in the valuations for purposes of
taxation.
Of the 22 tax books, approved and
filed iu the office of cue comptroller for
1901, only three counties show a falling
off from the valuations for 1900. The
aggregate valuation, as shown by the
tax books of 22 counties, is $50,098,946.
and the net increase over 1900 in tne
same counties is $961,879.

Nashville, Oct. 28.—The Tennessee
conference in session at Pnlaski has ex
pelled Rev. B. A. Cherry from the min
istry and membership of the M. E.
church, south. Rev. Cherry was charged
with fraudulently collecting insurance
on personal property, in the destruction
of which he is alleged to have been a
co-iuceudiary. The report was signed
by all the members of the trial commit
tee. Counsel for Rev. Cherry immedi
ately gave notice of an appeal to the
general conference.

rollton bar recommends Colonel Talbot
Smith of the Carrollton bar, who goes
to Fort McPherson to enter the United
States cavalry as secoud lieutenant.
Lieutenant Smith has been assigned to
the Eighth cavairy. He is 27 years old,
is a member of a fine family and is well

Death at Negro Dance.
Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. 28—Iu a
brawl at a negro dance hall aud “free
and easy” at tho corner of Burbridgc
Avenue aud Kings road. Will Smith,
a negro, w.as slashed to death with a
razor. Ed Love, a vonng negro, has
been locked up, charged with the as
sault, and Anna Hammond, the woman
over whom the fuss is said to have orig
inated, is also in custody.

New Machinery installed.
Tampa, Fia., Oct. 26.—The Tampa
Electric company has installed its new
machines in the branch powerhouse on
Tampa and Oass streets, aud they are
now working splendidly. These ma
chines are to assist the main station in
transmitting power on the long-distance
lines, ana in case of an emergency will
be capable of propelling the entire car
service of the company.
Found Dead in His Room.
Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. 28— D. A.
Harris, a white man, formerly yaramas-
ter for the Atlantic, Valdosta and West
ern, was found dead in bed in a room at
the Travelers’ hotel here and the evi
dences are that he committed suicide by
swallowing repeated doses of laudanum.
The cause for the suicide is supposed to
have been excessive indulgence in
liquor.
