The other schools in the
Coastal Empire Region may
wish Burke County hadn’t
started a middle school golf pro
gram.
In its inaugural season, Burke
County Middle School swept the
region tournament held last
week. The girls and boys teams
each won the region champion
ship trophies, and low medalist
honors went to Burke County’s
Dalton Quick and Rylie
Marchman.
Quick led the tournament with
his 38. Marchman finished with
the low girls score of 43, which
was also better than all the boys
in the tournament except Quick.
BCMS’s boys team was
helped to the championship by
Rusty Gay’s 44, Lee Justice’s 46
and Mitchell Vernon’s 49. Bai
lee Adkins turned in a 61 to help
the Lady Cubs win their trophy.
Burke County’s middle school
program began just last fall
when head coach Wade
Marchman began holding prac
tices. The teams, consisting of
nine boys and three girls, started
playing matches this spring.
All of the other schools in the
tournament, which included
nine boys teams and six girls
teams, already had golf pro
grams.
Coach Marchman said he
hopes the program will develop
the players at a younger age and
build a feeder program for the
high school teams.
“Each kid seemed to improve
throughout the course of the sea
son,” he said. "Hopefully, they’ll
continue to play through the rest
of the summer and strive to keep
getting better.”
Coach Marchman said one of
the most encouraging aspects of
middle school golf has been the
parental support.
“I was overwhelmed with the
number of parents who showed
up to support the kids through
out the tournament,” he said, es
timating around 150 spectators
followed the 75 participants in
the region tournament. “It was
much more than at a high school
tournament.”
Coach Marchman also
thanked the Waynesboro Coun
try Club for accommodating the
teams for practices and matches
on the course as well as hosting
the region tournament.
The Waynesboro Country
Club serves as the home course
for Burke County Middle and
High schools as well as Edmund
Burke Academy.
STATE TOURNAMENT
POSTPONED
The Class AAA state high
school golf tournament was
scheduled to be played Monday
in Columbus, but rain sent golf
ers home well before lunchtime.
The tournament has been re
scheduled for Monday, May 10.
Burke County High School’s
girls team qualified as region
runners-up and Shay Chavous
qualified as the low medalist for
Region 3-AAA.
Cubs finish up in final four
region golf tournament
The Edmund Burke Academy golf team traveled to Jekyll
Island yesterday (Tuesday) in hopes of upsetting Frederica
Academy and take home the Region 2-AA championship.
But, play was suspended until today (Wednesday) due to
inclement weather. The Spartans finished behind Frederica
in the practice round but hope to improve their team score
this afternoon. If the Spartans can secure a top four finish
they will advance to the state tournament, which will also
be held in Jekyll Island on Monday.

the Coastal Empire Region final four this year. The Cubs lost their final game 4-
2 to eventual region champions Ebenezer Middle School of Statesboro. Head
coach Billy Marchman praised his players and their parents for putting in extra
time for summer league, fall travel baseball and extra workouts. “I ask a lot
from my baseball parents because they have to sacrifice some of their leisure
time because of all the hours I like to work with these kids,” he said. Coach
Marchman recognized several of his players for their outstanding performances,
including “ace pitcher” Tidwell, leading hitters Jay Johnson and Rusty Gay,
and defensive standouts Martin Jarrett, Dalton Quick, Kris Skinner, Jordan Keller
