both the long
jump and triple jump as well as
finishing second in the 110-meter
hurdles. He jumped his personal
best with distances of 22 feet. 7
Vi inches and 45 feet, 1 Vi inches,
respectively.
He also logged his best ever
time of 14.91 seconds in the 110
hurdles to take the runner-up title.
Cobb surprised the field with
his first place finish in the pole
vault. The region meet was the
first time Cobb competed in the
event all season. He won after
reaching a height of 8 feet, 6
inches.
As a team, the Bears finished
third in the region behind Wash
ington County and West Laurens.
Head coach Purvis Dukes said
he was pleased with the perfor
mance of his athletes, many of
whom have little experience.
“The kids did a really good job
all year for us. We didn’t have as
much experience as we’ve had in
the past, but the guys out there
did really well,” he said. “We
couldn’t have asked for a better
effort. We have a solid nucleus
coming back and have something
to build on.”
Sophomore Montres Kitchens, above, won region titles in
the long and triple jumps and took second in the 110-meter
hurdles. He also won the high-point trophy.

Baseball season ends for the Bears
Sophomore Malcolm
Aldridge was congratu
lated at home plate after
hitting a two-run homer in
the Bears’ last home game
of the season. Burke
County High School’s
baseball team finished up
last week after dropping
games to Statesboro and
Baldwin.Though the Bears
struggled this season,
they should benefit from
more experience next year.
There were no seniors on
the team this year, so they
will likely return all of their
starters. To see additional
