• Arthur Lee Rhodes, 62, of

rested for DUI and driving with
a suspended or revoked license.

arrested for battery and cruelty to

• Willie Marion Brown, 52, of

arrested by the Georgia State Pa
trol for possession of marijuana
(less than one ounce). A $1,300
property bond was posted.
• Ray Zan Coffie Jr., 29, of
Barney Street, Blackshear, was
arrested by the Georgia State Pa
trol for DUI.
• Joan Dixon, 49, of Bargeron
Avenue, Sardis, was arrested by
the Georgia State Patrol for DUI.

ral District 23. "I think Burke County has
really gotten the short end in a lot of areas.
You just have so many issues up in Atlanta
now that affect our area of the state, like
water for one.”
Stone served as Waynesboro’s mayor, the
third generation in his family to do so, but
did not seek re-election after his four-year
term.
He has law offices in Swainsboro and
Waynesboro.
Though he practiced law in other parts of
the state following his graduation from the
University of Georgia’s School of Law in
1981, he returned to Waynesboro in 2001.
BURKE COUNTY QUALIFYING
The only race in Burke County that required quali
fying last week was for Solicitor General of State
Court. Jackson E. Cox was the sole candidate to
qualify and will run unopposed for his third term.
The Republican Party also submitted a question
to be included on the party ballot in the primary elec
tion in July.
The question will read:
Do you support an amendment to the Georgia
State Constitution so as to provide that the para
mount right to life is vested in each human being
from their earliest biological beginning until natural
death?

UDC
Margaret Jones #27 United Daughters of the
Confederacy will have a volunteer curator, An
gela Canty, at the Old Freight Museum Confeder
ate Section, located on Cotton Avenue in Millen,
the first Saturday of each month, beginning May
1, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
This is a result of the dedication that was held
there in October by MJ #27 UDC. The museum is
normally open Monday through Friday during
regular business hours, but this will give people
the opportunity to come by on Saturday and visit.
Admission is free. DVD’s of the service held
there are on sale for $25, both there and at The
Charm Bam. Anyone having anything of a his
torical and Confederate nature that they would like
to donate or loan can bring it by during chamber
of commerce’s regular hours.
Yard Sale
A yard sale to benefit Free Indeed Minishies
Inc. will be held 7:30 a.m., Saturday, May 8. There
will be furniture, appliances, clothes and more.
Buckhead Academy Reunion
A school-wide reunion is planned for Jenkins
County’s former Buckhead Academy students
(who attended or graduated), parents and staff
members. The reunion will be held at 11 a.m„
Saturday, June 12 at Hanging Rocks Plantation.
Lunch will be catered, and reservations are re
quired. The cost is $15 per person. For more in

Retired Educators
The Burke County Retired Educators Associa
tion will meet 3 p.m., Thursday, May 13, at the
Burke County Senior Citizens Center. End of year
activities will include a memorial service, instal
lation of officers and presentation of awards.
Diabetic Teaching
A free diabetic teaching class will be held 6-8
p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Burke Medical Center.
Those participating are encouraged to bring a
partner or any person who helps with food prepa
ration.

Free childbirth classes
Free childbirth classes will be held 5:30-
7:30 p.m., May 11, 12, 18 and 19, at Burke
County Healthy Start office, located at 114
Dogwood Drive in Waynesboro.

with pain in labor, what to expect during child
birth and the few weeks after the baby is born.

Yard sale/Boston Butt Barbeque
First Baptist Church of Waynesboro will
have a yard sale and sell slow-roasted Bos
ton butts 7 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 8.
Pre-order tickets for the Boston butts will
be available through the church office and
members of the church's mission team.
The church is also asking for gently-used
donations for the yard sale. Call the church

WMU Veterans’ Picnic
First Baptist Church will have its annual
WMU Veterans’ Picnic 11 a.m., Saturday,
