Life Lines
By Linda Lariscey
DISCERNMENT AND UNDERSTANDING
Teach me proper discernment and under
standing! For I consider your commands to
be reliable. Psalms 119:66 (NET)
God is our Father making us His sons and daughters.
Because His will and desires are perfect, He will bring us to
an expected end. The Lord’s thoughts for your future are to
prosper and not to harm you. But what are your expectations
for your life? If they do not align with your Father’s desires,
you will fall into a trap set by the father of lies, Satan. What
follows is enslavement, depression, and humiliation.
We live in a world full of many external and internal voices.
How many of us are sharp enough to know when we hear
a lie? Once we buy into anything that opposes God’s divine
nature, we set ourselves to go astray. We see this run
rampant in today’s culture through social and mainstream
media. Unfortunately, many professing Christians believe
the lies of people who are following a plan that opposes the
goodness of God and His Word, which is Life!
The Holy Spirit is our best friend. He lives in every born-
again believer. Within Him is the power to distinguish good
from evil. If you think that is a no-brainer, then think again.
Deception presents itself as just the opposite of what it
is. This brief prayer will make a difference in your daily
life: "Teach me, oh Lord, discernment and understanding
because your Word is reliable!"

Rich
hard and the heat was bitter
and mean like an old mountain
woman who has seen too many
hateful Winters. Most hours, I
worked beside them in an ef
fort to do the easier things that
would have only slowed their
progress.
One day, Jon and Nix were
shoveling tree shavings - from
fallen trees by the creek - into
our old farm truck. The boys
began a conversation on some
finer points of the Old Testa
ment, quoting scriptures from
the New International Version
while I replied with the King
James.
For two hours, they shoveled
shavings and talked the Bible.
Seventeen and 20 years-old. I
stopped and took a moment to
savor the solid raising of these
two “country elite.” My eyes
misted as I thought about how
proud Daddy would be that
the remnants of old hardwood
trees, that he had once owned,
were being handled by young
descendants who knew already
the value of bowed heads and
calloused hands.
Nix, blonde-haired, blue
eyed handsome and a star ath
lete, was the one who returned
the most regular of the three.
He listened to true country mu
sic in Tink’s truck and talked
level-headedly about his high
school graduation ceremony
that had been cancelled.
“Some kids are really upset.”
He shrugged as he steered the
old truck up the graveled road.
“But I figure everything hap
pens for a reason. It’s okay.
It’s a special memory because
it’s different from other gradu
ations.”
I stared at him for a moment
then turned my head to look out
the window at a long strand of
kudzu hanging from the bough
of an oak tree. Finally, I turned
and spoke.
“I wish I had been as wise at
17 as you are.”
One afternoon, Nix asked,
“Aunt Ronda, would you mind
reading my senior essay? I got
an A+ but I’d appreciate seein’
what you think.”
The essay arrived that night
by email, along with the grade
and the teacher’s remarks.
Stunned, I read the almost
scholarly piece that Nix had
written, debating if Jesus
Christ had lived as man and if
He was truly the Son of God.
At the end of several pages
of footnotes, scriptures, and
narrative, Nix declared that
“Jesus Christ is, indeed, the
Son of God.”
He goes to a public high
school. Not a private school or
Christian academy.
Continued from 5
“We were allowed to pick
our subject,” he explained. “I
didn’t know how my teacher
might receive it but I felt in
my heart that’s what I should
write.”
It’s intriguing how the red
dirt soil of my raising - earth
that is centuries old - continues
to teach me as the years fall
away from my meager grasp.
Courage, faith, and an un
yielding work ethic continues
to run strong in my family’s
bloodlines. Gratefully, the red
clay still covers our hands and
prayer covers our lives.

Since the repeal of Roe v.
Wade, some states’ century old
laws have been made opera
tional. These laws have a real
world impact on real women.
Recently a Wisconsin woman
who suffered an ‘incomplete
miscarriage’ was denied medi
cal assistance and left to bleed
due to the state’s law on abor
tion. The unidentified woman
bled for 10 days after staff re
fused to remove the pregnancy
tissue from her uterus for fear
that they would be infringing
on Wisconsin’s 1849 ban on
abortions. The law states that
performing an abortion is a
criminal offense, with notable
exception. Abortions are only
permitted in Wisconsin when
deemed “necessary, or is ad
vised by two other physicians
as necessary, to save the life
of the mother.” The New York
Times reported a story of a
35-year-old woman named
Amanda, who lives in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area, who
had a miscarriage in the first
trimester of her pregnancy. At
a large hospital, a doctor per
formed a surgical procedure
often used as a safe and quick
method to remove tissue from
a failed pregnancy. She awoke
from anesthesia to find a card
signed by the nurses and a little
pink and blue bracelet with a
Continued from 5
butterfly charm, a gift from
the hospital to express compas
sion for her loss. Eight months
later, in January, Amanda, who
asked to be identified by her
first name to protect her pri
vacy, experienced another first-
trimester miscarriage. She said
she went to the same hospital,
Baylor Scott & White Medical
Center, doubled over in pain
and screaming as she passed a
large blood clot. But when she
requested the same surgical
evacuation procedure, called
dilation and curettage, or D&C,
she said the hospital told her
no. A D&C is the same proce
dure used for some abortions.
In September 2021, in between
Amanda’s two miscarriages,
Texas implemented a law ban
ning almost all abortions after
six weeks into pregnancy.
Following the reversal of Roe
v. Wade, numerous states are
enacting bans or sharp restric
tions on abortion. While the
laws are technically intended to
apply only to abortions, some
patients have reported hurdles
receiving standard surgical
procedures or medication for
the loss of desired pregnan
cies. Great detriment occurs
to women, families, and com
munities when politicians don
medical garb and pretend they
are doctors.
