- Hoke Smith in Newton,
The fact that Hon. Hoke Smith
stands at.the top notch of the
people’s estimation in Newton
county was attested by the large
crowd of representative citizens
who greeted him at Covington
last Friday to hear him discuss
the issues of the present guber
natorial campaign. The court
house was crowded to its utmost
capacity and then there was a
number of pcople who could not
getin,
The speech was the best heard
in Covingtonin a long time and
the issues of the campaign were
handled in a straightforward aod
masterful manoer in which be
set forth that he believed in ne
gro disfranchisement, the child
labor bi |, is not in collusion with
Tom Watson, and does not want
the governor’s p'ace for a piece
of graft, He also showed whby
be was not a ring candidate. Ib
every sense his speech was a true
apalysis of Mr. Smith’s charac
ter, a straightforward, sensible
and honest man!—Mansfield Lea

On March fourth 1862 forty
four years ago last Sunday, tbe
conscript act of the Southern
Confederacy went into effect.
J. H. Hicks—a confedercte
veteran reminded us of the fact
and that brought to mind that
under that act we had two Texas
cousins conscrip’ed into the con
federate army and later on one
starved to death in a confederate
hospital. There was a lack of
provision. At one time during
the war their cousins met two
other cousins in line of battle in
the Ugnion army. Both sides
tbrew down their guns long
eaough to rush into one an
other’sarmsina aloving embrace.
Such is war and truly war is
—hell. The present generation
has no conception of what both
sides lived through.
