„ving liiuml her,
irec.
Love lives in all (flings bright;
And Fanny loved already, hut she ne < r
Had whisijeredof her passion, save in prayer
To the still night.
A strange and silent boy
Gazed distantly otrFanny, and there came
Into her heart a fond and holy Haute,
Breathing of joy.
But he was sad in youth,
Nor ever gave he token to the main
Os passion, in like holiness repaid,
With heart and truth.
Tune rolled, and Fanny crew
T<» share the sadness of the dreaming boy,
And joy in tier sad dreaming the alloy
Was pleasure 100.
While still around her hung
A throng of ghttering rivals, none were chosen;
And that one burning heart still held a frozen
And silent tongue.
I.ike the volcanic fire
That smothers ’neath a pyramid of snow,
So in imprisoned torment seemed to glow
The youth’s desire.
Time rolled —and came a day
When Fanny for the first time wept, alone,
For he on whom her wealth of love was thrown,
Had roamed away.
O, lie was poor and proud,
And could not, would not. mingle with the crew
That daily to the feet of Fanny flew,
With tongues so loud.
Fanny had ever been
Os lender moulding, and within her eves
Light flashed and laded, as the sunbeam dies,
Gorgeous at e’en.
Now grew upon her cheek,
A most strange coldness and a stranger bloom.
That deepened still, while smaller spot of room
It seemed to seek.
Time roiled —and one by one
Fanny’s rejected lovers dropped away,
And she was lonely and no longer gay,
For he was gone!
Sloivlv the years rolled by,
And Fanny, like some silent floral thing,
Fading too early in its native spring,
Bent down to die.
Still dreamingiv she loved,
And muttered, voiceless, to each passing bird,
Asking what news was of the wanderer heard,
Or where he roved !
But the youth came no more:
And Fanny’s history was early told ;
Still rapidly she faded on time rolled
And Fanny died!
When first her cheek was pale,
Some wondered, ami some pitied, but none knew,
As cold consumption struck her bosom through,
Os this sad tale.
Time’s scythe was still on wave,
Tears after, when an old man bent and wept,
Ands g led away his life, and soundly slept
On Fanny’s grave!
Phazma.
Marriagk.—How differently do age
and youth argue on that matter, and how
very opposite are the circumstances
which it throws into die scale of imagin
ary happiness. Both may be erroneous;
but when the path of life lias been tro i
den, and all its early blandishments and
bloom are fallen into the scar and wither
ed leaf, how few they are who know how
to recal the time when their bosoms beat
with other aspirations than those of wealth,
title, or any items which make up a mar
riage for convenience. If the aged could
be less dry and hard, the young might,
perhaps, become less impetuous and head
strong.
On men of lighter minds, the vices of
the world, and what are too lightly named
its follies, act in a different way, and only
serve to render them frivolous and con
temptible ; but on characters of deeper
stamp, if these obtain a sway, it becomes j
of greater magnitude, of more extensive !
evil. To every individual, indeed, as a
responsible being (in which light none can j
be passed over or considered valueless,) I
the terrible Consequences of ill conduct
are equally momentous ; but, as far as re- i
spects the others, it is the one distinguish
ed above the common herd, whose ac- I
ttons, habits and opinions assume a con
sequence, which, like a beacon light set
on high, becomes a warning or example
to multitudes.
Distrust all who love you extremely,
upon very slight acquaintance, and with
out any visible reason.
There is a small chance of truth at the
goal, where there is not a child like hu
mility at the starting post.
There are many men who have a strong j
curiosity to know what is said, who have j
little or no curiosity to know what is true.
The man who is worth millions of dol
lars and never thinks of bestowing anv
portion of it upon the starving, destitute,
suffering poor, is of little advantage to
any community.
The maiden’s soul is a full blown rose,
