Mr. Cleveland is reported to l>e
quits a sick man. He is at
Woodley, his eountry home.
Mr. Cleveland has intimated,
thatenone but gold bugs need ap
ply for positions under the pres
ent administration. The silvsrites
are-not in it with him. j
J [*
.;JTh. aesthetic Oscar Wilde, the
leader of London society, has been
found guilty of grossly indecent
conduct, and sentenced to two
years at hard labor in ■ the work*
house.
Bop. Walter Q Gresham, secre
tary of state uh<yrthe~ present
administration, died on last Tues
dayof ncute pneumonie. Hon.
W C Whitney of New York, is
spoken of to All the vacancy.
Last Sundays Athens Banner
was out in an editorial against tha
railroads running excursions out
ef Athens. They call on the mer
chants to atop it, by boycotting
the road a that run them. This
is lfke dating straws against the
winds, excursions can’t be stop
ped.
We ar> pained to learn that our
old frifend Jeff McClesky, formerly
of Athens, and t son of Dr. Mc-
CHiiiky, died in Atlanta last week
from the effects of an overdose rf
loudnum. Jeff was a jolly, goed
fellow, and has on more than one

It is thought that Mr. Cleveland
is pulling the strings for a third
term in the White House, and
that hia mode of procedure will be
op the “sound money" or single
gold standard lin6. ** Tfe-is' also
thought that should the demo
cratic party declare for free silver
that Cleveland will bolt the Jparty
to become thd candidate of the
gold men, thus making the fight
outeide the party and will try te
draw strength from all sources.
Wjr. Cleveland is making himself
pediculous.
The Fort Lamar Com
mencement.
The Ft.' Lamar High School
in oHarte of Pro?. R A MoMurry
and ft’tfe, clossd last Friday even
ing with an excellently rendered
programme.
Despite the enclemency of ,the
weather there waa a large attend
ance on hand for an entertainmeut
given free of charge by the young
people of the Fort. ;
“Two much of a Good Thing”
a drama,in three acta, waa in
tended to be aide-splitting and
it certainly succeeded. It gave
the awkward oountrv oousin a few
hints about how te do when he
visits his country cous.na. This
little drama consumed only HO
minutes. Nevertheless it alone
would hare been high compensa
tion to ail preaent.
Then came “On The Brink”, a
drama, which would have made
the hard heart of the drunkard
aink within him, and to draw
strong resolutions to rever inter
fere with the wins cup while life
lasts.

After the exercise* had closed,
in company with M. M. Gholiton,
wa were invited to the hospitable
home of Mr. Wyly J. Freeman,
and of course accepted with pleas
ure, where we were highly enter

man’s exoeUsnt country home fol

ble helped us to enjoy the follow
ing day.
Saturday was consumed by Prof.
McMurry’s well trained students,
m a prize dwlamation contest,
sod Mrs. Me Murry’s music elasr
interspersed the ex
cellent musio which proved to all
present that Mrs. McMurry bad
imparted graceful musical talent
to all her pupils.
The prize was captnred bv sweet
Jittle L'*is MeWhirter, who display
ed wonderful elocutionary powers.
Little Min McWhirter’s average
wa 965. Those of honorable men
tion were Messrs. Oecar Payne, t>6,
Edgar Payne, 94f, and Mieses An
nie Brown, 94*, Clare Wilder,oBs,
and Blanche Wade, 91$.
We heartily congratulate the.
young peopie of Fort Lamar in
their energy and consequent suc
cess of an entertainment, and also
Prof, McMurry on the manner in
which he has conducted the school
as shown by the advancement of
his students on last Saturday.
The entire assemblage dined at
the academy and a more bounti
ful dinner was never served than
by the good people in and around
Ft. Lamar. *
On Saturday night we accepted
an invitation to another of Madi
son county’s most successful
farmers, Mr. Waltoa J. Freeman.
At hit borne we saw the'effects of
energy,< such as stock raising,
stsady work land good farming will
accomplish. -
