From Bachelor’s Den.
This is a bright and beautiful
day and looks somewhut. like spring
The bluebird is on the wing. '1 nere
is a mocking bird Hitting about my
“den” occasionally, which has re
mained lure all winter. It has
been pretty severe on it- these cold
nights.
We had a terrific wind, rain and
thunder storm yesterday after
noon. It’s a little singular, but
we have bud a storm of this kind
in the last three Feminines.
My hens are strictly leap-year
“maids.” They refused, with ail
my persuasion, to lay a single egg
during the winter until the first
day of February.
The mumps are still raging in
and around Comer. Robert ltus
sell, a bachelor neighbor of mine,
had them and they served him
pretty roughly. He had to “sit
up” with himself live nights on a
straight.
Mrs. Robert Wood and little Al
ice are on a visit to Mrs. John C.
Carithers. Mrs. Wood’s health lias
been somewhat impaired for quite
a while, but she is doing well at
present.
Now that we arc a full-fledged
candidate, wo feel no “change” in
our pulse—neither in our purse.

Tendency ol the Times.
The tendency of medical science
is toward preventive measures. Tho
best, t hought of the world is being
given to the subject. It is easier
and latter to prevent t han to cure.
It. has been fully demonstrated that
pneumonia, one of the most dan
gerous diseases that, medical inen
have to contend with, can be pre
vented bv the use of Chamberlain’s
Cough Remedy, Fneumotiiaulways
results from a cold or from an at
tack of influenza (grip,) and it Iras
been observed that this remedy
counteracts any tendency of these
diseases towards pneumonia. This
has been fully proven in many thou- 1
sands of cases in which tins reme
dy has been used miring tile great
prevalence of colds and grip in re
cent years, and can he relied upon i
with implicit.confidence. Pneumo-j
nia often results from a slight cold,
w hen no danger is apprehended un- [
til it is suddenly discovered that
there is fever ami difficulty in hrea-!
thing and pains in the chest, then
it is announced that the patienthas
pneumonia. Be on the safe side and
take Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy
as soon as the cold is contracted.

Editors Monitor : Maj. Thomp
son, in your issue of Jan. 29, casts
a reflection on cur school and com
munity. I shall not repeat his
words; Ido not like them. It is
true our school was a wgek late in
starting, but we have opened un
der very favorable circunistanoes
in some-respects. We have an at
tendance of nearly 60. If we are
treated fairly I believe we wll en
roll 100. Major says the school is
for the poor, ignorant white chil
dren. Well, we do not claim te
be rich. If a person is poor, he
does not like to ha ve a not her throw
ing it uji to hi m ; and besides. I do
not know that we are poorer than
the average comm unity. If we are.
it seems a little hard to get other
| people to see it that way. For in
stance, we have a good framed and
iceiled school house, well heated
and lighted. Again, our people are
supplementing largely our teach
er’s salary. I believe that we an
getting loss per scholar than any
other place in the county, The
school on one side of us has about
twice ns many pupils as we have.
I hey have a promise from the coun
ty o! $l2O per month. The school
on the other side has an attend
ance not more than two-third#that
of ours. They have,l understand,
a bona fide promise from the coun
ty of $65 per month. Now. if we
are so poor, why’should we be paid
$ 10 per month for.6oscholars.when
another school is paid $l2O for S2O
scholars, and another soo tor !')
scholars?
Major says it is for the ignorant...
If we are mere ignorant here than
elsewhere, is it just to pay ns 6“
cents a pupil and some other school
from $1 to st.so? 1 hi pc •he C.
S G. and board will look into this
matter.
Another word about being poor
Poverty may be, and often is, a
misfortune. Where a boy has t >
begin life without a dollar, he has
. hard time. It is very unfortu
nate for afather not to have a good
I;-me for every child he has. Asad
poverty sometimes is a disgrace.
Vi here a hoy has a good home left
him by his father and the hoy dis
sipates and runs through with it
all, it is a disgrace. 1 hope that
none of the poor, ignorant w hite
children that, attend school at Ca
in tilers’ academy will over be so
ii isgracod.
