The cotton growers of Madison
County are urged to visit the cot

control this season which are to he
operated by the farmers named above
Liquid poisons and dry calcium ar
senate will be used throughout the
season. The first applications will be
made with a mop during the month
of May and early part of June, and
as the cotton limbs out, a hand power
spraying pump or dusting machine
will be used. Kill the winter-hibtr
nating weevils r,s they come into the
fields after the crop i-* chopped to a
stand, and by stopping the early cy

good crop of cotton can be matured
by August Ist. even if migration

STEEL ROADS
Tilt man who is laughed at today
i,. revere! to-nonow. They laugheu
at Btil and his telephone, Edison and
his elect! ic light, and Langley with
hi,, crazy flying machine. The Wrignt
brothers went and . jhitd, the discoverer
cf X rays were ridiculed, and iHe
“radio delusion” 1 "ought sinilts and
amusement.
But not niwl
It is as impossible for ns to say,
now, what the road of the future i>
to be. as it was impossible for us to
ray, five gears ago, wh,it the rar;
broadcast cf to-day would be.
An inventor wants to interest cap
ital ic making a roadway of sire’.
It will cost, if built, not thousands,
but several hundred cf thousands of
dollars pc r r mdc. i’ioad builders laugh
Tht public laughs. We all laugh.
Why pay thrte hundred thousand
dollars a mil. for roads when we can
get them for a few thousands?
Twenty years ago the idea of pry
ing twenty five t-housvpc. dollars
mile tor read was laughed at!
This steel idea nay le all wrong.
Ic hrsr-'t been trie!. It may be chim
erical i:i the extreme. We ton’t know
But we do knew that laughing at
it because its different is no way to
provt it idjotic • Ten years ago people
laughed at the idea of national high
way? . They don’t laugh any more.
More and rat re re- pit are coming to
! :ilv:k that highways are as much a
part if ■ f ■ Nation's business as v.*n
ieuways. Panama Canal, battleship,
an army.
The new idea is always laughed
at. laughter doesn't prove anything
ex -r-yf the “stand-pal-mind” of the
laugher. Maybe steel roads at thret
hundred thou and dollars a mile arc
impractical. But why not bring
somtthing el-t to bear cr- the (Ques
tion beside: laughter? Nobidy laughs
at national highways any moil; not
even Congress!
The joke of yesterday is the fact
of tc-day. Maybe .ve will yet ride on
national highways of steel! They
laughed at steel rail; for locomo
tives, toe. They laughed at transcon
tin or fay highways. And how they did
laugh at Dt Le--.eyr and hi; Panama
Canal!
He laughs btst who laughs last.
