market closed. Liverpool also recovered
her loss, closing the same as last night,
with sales of 10,900. Our Liverpool cables
stated that they regarded the outlook
for trade in Great Britain as a gi"-ny
and that Manchester was getting
worse, and this was corroborated by ca
bles to other houses here. We mink,
however, the improvement Here, whiett
also affected Liverpool before toe close,
was due largely to the market having
been oversold during the past few days,
and when shorts began to cover they
•started the ball rolling, and there was
a general disposition to take In profits on
that side. This improvement seems to
have given a check to the bearish feel
ing that has prevailed for the last forty-
eight hours. The government orop re
ports published today for the week end
ing yesterday are not as favorable as
private reports had foreshadowed, and
this may have had some cttect also In
strengthening prices.

ATWOOD’S COTTON LETTER.
Special Wire to Lyons & James,
New York, July 25.—What promised to
be, judging by Liverpool’s opening, a weak
market on this side today proved to have
been quite the reverse, as after selling
down 8 points below- last night’s close,
there was a recovery of 9to 10 points, at
which the market closed firm. Liverpool
alsj recovered her loss, closing the same
as Fast night, with spot sales of ,10,000.
Our Liverpool cables stated that’ they
regarded tlje outlook for trade in Great
RriuUn as a gloomy one, and that Man
chester was greatly worse, and this was
corroborated by cables to other houses
here. We think the Improvement here,
which also affected Liverpool before the
Hone, was due largely to the market hav
ing been oversold here during die past
few days, and when shorts began to cover
they started the^ ball rolling and there
was & general disposition to take profits
on that side. Tills Improvement SBtofi
to have given a check to the very benr-
i»h feeling that has prevailed for the
last forty-eight hours more particularly.
The government crop report published to
day for the weeklng ending yesterday la
not as favorable as private reports had
foreshadowed, and this may have Ifnrt
Rome effect also In strengthening price*.
If Liverpool is somewhat better tomor
row, there should be some response here.
Tort receipts today. 267 against 200 for
ti»e some day last year. '

Corn opened active and hlgner, prices
showing an advance of 84 over yesMi^

due to the government's prediction of
