About dark Tuesday afternoon a ne

young negress named Jj3um RohtnAon

gIrt'H<parenitA8a1d she was only 15 years
of QftC, ami, objecting to her departure,
had a warrant te*ued for Lockett for
kidnaping-
About the same time tho alleged kid

lnlo n flghit with another negro nnd
carved him In the m!b»t approved otyle

* Lockett nml the girl met Jones nnd
they agreed to lice together.
Tho darkles went in the direction of
Albany, ond iMr. Joe Greer, armed with
warrants and Mr. blade's track hounds,
went In pursuit, arriving In that city
just before day the next morning otter
an ull-nuht rim**-.
The Albany ond of the story, which la
b*«t told by »tho Herald, is n«i follows:
’’After Mr. Greer hod Morml awny his
dogs and was walking around the streets
ho vory unexpectedly came upon Jones
st th©_Intersection of Broad nnd Jack-

turned him over to Officer Mooney, who
at once landed bln prisoner in the coin-

officer went in eearcSi of Lockett, but

back mid got Mr. Qmi nnd the dogs.
'The dogs took 'the track readily end
were BQon making tho welkin ring.
Once the canine* overtook the negro,
but were beaten off with n Atick. Later
on they took 'tho tmek again and ran
the negro to n point about four miles
down tho river, where he took to the
water ond twain norms. The <logu fol
lowed hnlf winy and were then allied
back by (Mr. Greer, who ivta tho only
person 'there with them. Officer Mooney
having returned to tho city in order to
attend the police count. Mr. Greer re
turned later. Officer Mooney soya It
w »h “tho biggest race ho ever had—over
Ibgs and brushes, through thicket* and
through wire fences—blowing like n

"The negro girl, who was supposed
by tho offlcera to bo only 15 yearn old, is

On account of the great excitement
wlhch the fDftodt ermtod a Herald re

COTTON AND THE BOLL WORM.
.What Mr. J. 3. Elder Thinks After
a Trip to His 1'luntatlon.
Mr. J. 3. Elder, one of the host farm
ers In this section, has Just returned
from n visit to Ids plantation, nnd on
his trip gave especial attention to the
crops along tho way. Ho is considered
conservative, and his opinion always
carries weight with those who know
him.
Ho was seen yesterday by a Call re
porter and asked Ills views upon the
condition of cotton. 'In reply he said:
"Tho boll worm Is playing havoc
with cotton and the crop that wo ex
pected three weeks ngo wlljL never he
realized, for It will he much 'below last
year, in many plnees nit of the late
crop that we liail looked forward to
has been destroyed, mid, aside from the
fact that It Is a month late, there arc
bottom bolls that will never open. 1
have noticed, too, that the boll worm
seems worse <m smalt cotton, grown on
poor land than on tho rank stalks that
have grown higher, something I have
never noticed before. „
"Our com will not be as gpod ns was
nt llrst expected, for thero will bo too
much shuck and tho ears in many in
stances nro faulty. I fee! discouraged
111 tho face of the present low prices,
but suppose that everything will work
out somehow."
The statement, nnd view's In regard
to cotton by Mr. Elder nre more than
substantiated by other prominent fann
ers. who complain of the boll wontts
nnd other backsets to cotton. It will
bo a sad state of affairs if the fanners
make very short croiw this season, but
not so disastrous ns it would have been
had they gone hi debt recklessly.—
