ment and perhaps tho most distinguish
ed musician which Spain, a rather un*l
musical country, has produced. Wonder
ful as his playing waa'in many respects,
Its most distinguishing feature was the
"Sarasat* tone." which lingers In the
minds of all who have heard it, like ths
voice of Patti In her prime. It was not
n largo tone, as compared with that of
Joachim or Wllhalmy, but it was abso
lutely pure and had an Intensity that
made It carry In the largest halls with
aJmost undiminished effect. "Golden
was ths epithet that occurred apontan-
eously to every hearer. He had a brll-i
Hunt technique and excelled In showy
passages, but his playing waa characte-i
rlxedoy grace rather than fir©. He play
ed classical music, too, not with the
breadth und aoUdW ot th*, German
school, but with rare charm., Hla com
positions, and especially his Spanish
(lances, are great favorites with violin
ists and with tho public. Th* deaths,
coming *o closely together, of Joachim.
Wilhelm J and Sarasato. are a great loss
to tho musical world. 8arasat# was bom
at Pampelana, Spain, March 10. 1144,
and studied In Pnrli with the famous
violinist Alard. The greater part of his
mature life was given to traveling as al
virtues#, and h* was well known In every
civilised country.—Springfield Republican. |

HENRY CLEWS’WEEKLY
FINANCIAL REVIEW
NEW YORK, Oct. 10.—Evidences of
business improvement are multiplying In
various directions. This (s not only true
of the west, where condition* are sound
and promising, but also in ths east, where
the depression has boon moat sever*,
[Railroad traffic is recovering, and tho
S -umber of Idle cars )s steadily diminish
ing. Earnings of 37 roads reporting tho
third week of September showed de
creases of le«s than 4 per cent, whereas
in July and August th# same roads were
showing losses of If to 17 per cent. Sep
tembers bank clearings showed an in
crease of I per cent over the same month
last year, a fact which is surprising In
view of the prevailing quietness of busi
ness; and while stock exehango. activity
probably accounted for much of the In-
crea&e In clearings at New York, the
gains reported from many cities in va
rious part* of the country prove beyond
question that business is surely though
slowly reviving-In spite of a political
campaign. If other evidences of recov-
e.-y are desired they can be easily found.
Improved conditions In the money mar
ket have carried natural and much need
ed relief In various directions. Bankers,
although In a discriminating mood, will
now lend with greater freedom on ail
sound and legitimate enterprises. Real
estate Is feeling the advantage of this
relief: property Is changing hands more
freely, and better class developments
which were blocked by the panic aro be
ing carried out with more promise. Now

In different parts [’of the country, which
have been shut down either owing to
dull business or tire drouth, aro starring
up and many that have teen running
on short time are preparing to run full
time. In many Instances moderate con
cessions have been made In wages; and
there Is no doubt that If the elections
prove ratlsfactory there will follow a
widespread improvement In th© volume
of business.
The first question to be asked la how
long will this Improvement last In view
of to* fact that the country will short
ly be precipitated Into a sharp tariff
saltation, both parties being pledged to
revMon. Tariff changes are always un
settling; tho uncertainty as to what will
be done usually being a more serious
Imatter than the actual changes. For
tunately. tha country 1# In some respect*
better able to stand tariff discussion than
lever before. Th* tariff in many Instances
Lis *« high that. a moderate ’ reduction
would do little or no harm to boms In
terests. and would increase the national
rovagu*. Tn other cases our manufactu
rers would be positively benefited by *
reduction of the tariff on their raw mate
rials. The most likely point of attamc
Is th* steel tariff: put there Is an ampie
margin her# and our steel Industry la
so well fortified bv superior methods and
low coats of production that Us future
will not bo seriously endangered by any
weir considered reduction; ’Whathsr the
estronton against corporations will be
conducted os aggressive!? as heretofore,
or not. Is an open question. Already
there has boon a decided reaction In
puhllo opinion In this respect and tho'
feeling that tha country needs a rent
from this sort of agitation 1« steadily
raining ground. A* soon as the presi
dential election Is oyer, tha antl-corpora-
tJnn policy will not he so much In de
mand as a political Issue.
