"GET DOWN TO BRASS TAOKS"
It frequently happens that one can better emphasize a
fact by dropping into the nomenclature vernacular of the day,
so I say, Get Down To Brass Tacks on this house building
question.
How much rent a month are you paying—$18 or $20?
Now you get nothing to show for it, do yout But do
you realize that for $2 to $5 a month more you can buy a
home at Log Cabin Heights, paying the same as rent for five
years! Do you realize that at the end of five years you have
nothing more to pay, excepting $3 a month interest on a
$500 mortgage—all you then owe on your home!
If you realize this, and don’t act upon it, it is because
your interest in your wife and children is not even enough
to cause you to deny yoursolf the cigars, or whatever ijt will
be necessary to deny yourself, in older to pay this $2 to $5
a month.
If you’re ever going to have a home, you’ll get one now
—or never.
Think. And “Get Down To Brass Taaks," now.
Anticipating any objections anybody/may guess at, I
will say, yes, there’s telephone, water, electric lights and a
yard that is probably bigger than you have now.
I’ve plans ready, but will build according to yours, if
vou wish it.

PANAMA BONDS
ARE INJIEMAND
Subscriptions Alreadyiin Ex
cess of Amount to Be
Issued
WASHINGTON. Dec. 4—Investor*
desiring u share , of the new issue of
, $30,000,000, Panama canal 2 per cent
8 old bonds will hav* to hurry, as the
Ime allotted by the treasury depart
ment for receiving aubacrlptlonw will
expire at the cloae of bualneaa tomor
row. According to unofficial reports,
the subscriptions are already far In
excess of the amount to be Issued,
despite the fact that the bonds will
command a premium and will bear
only 2 per cent Interest.
The bonds will be dated Novem
■her 1, 1908, thus making thte a new
Issue, and interest will begin as of
that date. They will mature In thir
ty years, but may be redeemed In ten
years. Bach bid must be accompan
ied by a certified check for S per
cent of the amount of the bid.
What Spooner Act Providss.
The Spooner act providing for build
ing the canal authorised the Issuance
of bonds to the amount of $180,000,000
and under It there have already beon
two sales, one aggregating $10.000,ooo
and the other $24,000,000. Tho pres
ent sale will bring the total up
$84,000,000. leaving but $44,000,000
more to be sold.
Secretary Cortelyou said that no
significance attaches to this Issue at
this time; that the expenses of build
ing the ennnl warrant the Issue of
more bonds.
The cost of the big ditch has thus
fir exceeded the amount realized
through selling bonds by more than
$28,000,000. The additional sums have
beon psId from the working balances
on hand In the, treasury. Today this
working balance aggregates but about
$18,000,000, and It Is considered Inex
pedient to reduce U further.
Legislation May Be Necessary
It Is evident that legialatlon will be
necessary In the near future to pro
vide funds for continuing the canal
work. When the remaining $40.00o,-
000 authorized hns been expended the
Issunnce of additional bonds must be
authorized as the threatened heavy
deficit In the treasury will not per
mit the application of any more ensh
from the working balance. In fact.
It Is probable congress will be request
ed to make good the $28,000,000 al
ready paid from that aource.
For the approaching Issue the cou
pon bonds will bo Issued In demonl-
natlons of $20. $100 and $1,000, and
the registered bonds of $20, $100, $1,-
000 and $10,000. They will be ex
empt from all federal taxes or duties,
as well as taxation In any form by
state, municipal or local authority.
The bonds will be available to nation
al banks aa security for circulating
notes and recelvablo as security for
public deposits in national banks. Thw
law forbids their sale at less than
par, and provides that all citizens
shall have equal opportunity to sub
scribe for them.
In considering the bids the secre
tary will award the first allotment to
the bidders offering the highest prices
and of two or more bidders offering
the same prices those asking for the
smaller amounts will have priority.

bound to be a cloae one.
The golf links at the cabin are now
being Improved. Hundred and twenty
yards are being added to the length of
the course, and & new hole la being

fore the Christmas handicap tourna
ment. A new putting green la a I no
In course of construction.
These Improvements and additions
to the golf links will necessitate an
Increase In the bogey of the course.
This matter will, however, be left to
Mr. Wilbur Oakes, the golf profes
sional and Instructor In charge of the
links.

The Ingrate,
The court was nurprlsed to find be-
for him yesterday morning Minerva
and Melvins, both of whom hs thought
wero at the stockade doing time for
Hoparato cases of disorderly conduct,
aim hero <hcy were.
It seems that while they were at
the stockude they brushed up an old
limit acquaintance, and had become
fast friends. Minerva was the first to
completo her sentence, and for the
ties of friendship that had bean knit
while they were fellow prisoners she
went at once to wofk to borrow or
otherwise got up enough money to
pay tho unworkod portion of Mel-
vlna’a fine. Then, hand In hand, they
started life anew.
Having been deprived of nl-beer for
ao long, they decided that tho tint
thing, they would do would be to load
up and try to make up for loat time.
Minerva had a rousln from whom she
secured a dollar. It was all the
money they could get, but Just havi n B
left the gang where food was plen
tiful, they were not so hungry as they
were thirsty. While they were off
on tho gang their rooms had been de
nuded of everything, the rooms taken
by other people, ao that they had no
plare to go nicer* to Mary Jackson’s
In Yamacraw. Mary was a friend to
any woninn In distress to the extent
of her ability, which wasn't much, but
that much was shelter. Where they
got the nl-heer. or how they got It
did not develop, but they got It and
two hours or more later they were
sleeping In the cells. What they did
and what they said after the nl-beer
got In Its dendly work was a sealed
book to them, to be opened at the
trial.
The officers told of the trouble. All
Yamacraw was torn up. The. good
people down there were simply horri
fied at the language used, and x hard
working ^brickyard man waa badly
beaten up with a bed-alat.
Then and there the friendship so
warmly formed at the stockade was
dfesolv*). It wse till right v> bo
friends at the stockade, but now that
another term there stared them In
the face, It was the duty of esch to
lay the fuss on the other and follow
the plan of every man for himself. It
was Minerva who had the first shot!

It took Malvina's nreath away to

she hesitated long.

And the court broke two hearts
when he eent both to the gang for
thirty days each without a fine. Rut
the officers said that by the time
they got to the stockade they would
be as fast friends as ever.
