Its mammoth shops in Macon, and Is
getting ready to expend something Ilka
one million dollars more toward mak
ing these shops the largest In the
south, with the exception
Louisville. and Nashville shops In
Louifivllle,** Ky., la evidenced by ao
application that will be presented to
the mayor and council asking for cer
tain grant* and for the privilege of
closing alleys 1n a part of the city
reserve now of no benefit to the city.
Much more than a quarter of a
million dollara has been spent on the
present shops, and a walk over them
la a revelation to any one who will
spare the time. They are complete
in every detail, and yet they are to
bo extended to more than double their
present capacity and ground, to
nothing of the increased force of
men.
To do this the company will tear
down all the present buildings on the
old site, and construct entirely new
shop"’ buildings that will cover all the
present area of ground on which the
old shops stand. Only Pine street will
then divide these two Immense shops.
The present shops are so complete
and so well equipped with modern ap
pliances for the lifting and handling
of Immense weights, as those of a lo<
comotive, that an engine of one hun
dred or one hundred and twenty-flve
ton* I* picked up and carried from
one place to another as easily as tg
man can pick up a basket of eggs,
and as carefully.
Electrical Energy Used.
All these powerful cranes are moved
by electricity, and not only doe* elec
tricity furnish the motive power, but
all the lights for both shops and of
fices and all the yards. Poles are be
ing strung all along the tracks and
yards, from the river to the Rtevcns
Pottery. This light all of which
generated In the shops, will light up
the union depot, the poles and appli
ances now being put up for the pur
pose. By Its own dynamos, the tracks
of the Central within the city. In con
nection with the shops and main Ones
and switches and yards, will be light
ed as bright as day.

the company's own waterworks sys

The new shops are provided with
every convenience for the employe,
showing the consideration of the com
pany for the men who work for It In
these shops. There are lockers and
lavatories In abundance, so arranged
that when the employe quits work ha
passes through a building where all
these conveniences are arranged, and
ho emerges Into the street as If ho
hnd stepped out of a bandbox.
But the plans of the company require

United States cruiser Yankee, which
has been aground on Hen and Chick
ens shoals in Buzzard's Bay for the
last ten weeks, has been floated and
has started for New Bedford In tow
according to a wireless message re
ceived at the naval station hero to
night from her commander, Charlea
C. Marsh.
The Yankee will undergo minor re
pairs at New iBedford after which It
is planned that she will proceed undei
her own steam to the New York navy
yard for a complete overhauling.
