Yonr notioe of the recentdeceaseof a very
aged gentleman, who was a passenger on
''niton’s first steamboat, bnilt in tho year
1808, reminds me of the sight of that boat
in April, 1810, when a schoolboy at New-
bnrg, on the Hudson rirer. About the mid
dle of the day she was slowly passing np
stream from New York, whence she had
started the previous day on her passage to
Albany, 166 miles distant. As the boat
laid by over night on her early trips she
had tied np the previous night at the wharf
of some town below Newbnrg, the latter
place being seventy miles above New York.
People at the present day probably have
no conception of the contrast of Fnlton’s
first steam craft compared with the mag
nificent one* in present use of several thou
sand tons capacity. A description of tho
Clermont, her name, in my quite distinct
recollection, is as follows: Nhe was about

the water as an empty oanalboat. Of how
much water she drew I am ignorant, bnt
probably not exceeding six feet. The
wheels on her sides were small, abont
twelve or fifteen feet in diameter, drivon by
a muill engine, in those days cf quid im
perfect construction compared with
those of tho present day. The fuel
of her furnace was of light pine
wood, and ent from Long Island, as were
those of the Hudson river boats for many
years afterward. Her speed was apparently
not to exceed five o'r six miles an honr.
Few passengers were on board, and as she
stopped at each wharf in the town she
wuomd to let off or take on the few travelers
sho had, her poBsoge from New York to
Albany and back was slow; eaoh protracted
to two or three days, as circumstances might
govern. Her measured capacity might be
two or three hnndred tons, but carrying no
freight other than the baggage of her pas
engers.
A very nniqne looking thing she was,
and marvelous to the sight-seers who
flocked along the shore to see her move
ments. Bnt she provid a success, and
within a few years a better, largerand more
perfect boat succeeded the Clermont, with
peater speed and passenger accommoda-
ions. So that Bteam travel on tho river
became popular, and well paid tho owners
of tho craft.
Fulton, an Englishman, I think, poor in
purse, had struggled several years in bis
experiments, bnt had worked under the
wtronage and pnrao of one of tho wealthy
Jvingston families located in tho vicinity
of Hudson, then quite a shipping
above I’oughkecpsie. Tho success of
ton, conpled with the wealth and political
influence of tho Livingstons, and the now
associates connected with them, induced
the Legislature of the State to granPthem a
monopoly of steam navigation within the
boundaries ot New York, at least, if not
boyond her territory, to such extent that
vast fortunes wore anticipated io tho fu
ture from their enterprise.
In a few years, however, a wealthy resi
dent, Ur. Stevens, at Hoboken, opposite
Now York city, a man of great mechanical
jenius and experience, bnilt a new and more
mproved boat than those of the Fntton-
Livingston combination, and pnt her on
passages from Jersey City np the river to
Albany and back, which soon engrossed
the popular favor aad proved a strong mm-
ictitor. The consequence of Stevens's tf-
ort was a anit at law in the Supreme Conrt
of the United States, instituted by the
Fniton-Livingston party sgaii-at Stevens.
After a long and oostly contest the conrt
decided that the New York grant of mo
nopoly was unconstitutional, and thus es
tablished the rights of Stevens and all
others to build and navigate steam vessels
on any waters In tho United States. After
that ths father of Stevena and his energetic
sons, backed by their abundant capital,
become the largest and most successful
steam owners and bavigatorsot tho Hudson
river and Now Jersey waters for several
years, until they were driven off and bought
oat by the rising and nneonscions "Com
modore” Vanderbilt, who had worked his
way from running a small ferryboat be

The dynamite war vessel to be construct

pbia will not be a seagoing vessel, as hia
been supposed in some quarters. She ia
intended solely for harbor defense. Owing
to the peculiar nature ot her intended arma
ment ahe will not be ebloto carry coal snffi-
otent for erniaing purposes.
During an interview this evening with
Mr. Castles II. Cramp, of the eontraetin]
Arm, the Herald correspondent iearnai
that the twelve inch gone with which the
boat is to be armed will throw COO pounds
of dynamite.
!Tha model of the boat will follow
closely as p mibie that of El Deetraidor,

In addition to the seven rapid firing gnng
wanted on the Spanish vessel the dynamite
gunboat will have three dynamite gnns.
This fact will necessitate the building of a
vessel far superior to El Destreidor, as the
weight of the dynamite gone, with Oceania-
la tors, reservoirs and other appiianoea, will
be abont one hnndred and twenty tons, w
which most bs added about tea tons weigh!
